Ghost in the Shell: Japanese Fans Debate Which Motoko Kusanagi Is the "Real" One — "Every Version of Me Is Still Me"
"Every version of me is still me" works fine for me — they're all Motoko Kusanagi anyway.

A Japanese compilation channel lined up Motoko Kusanagi's design and personality across the original Shirow Masamune manga, Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film, Kamiyama's Stand Alone Complex, and the new 2026 anime — and across 363 comments, the top-liked take (177 likes) is a shrug: "'Every version of me is still me' works fine for me, they're all Motoko Kusanagi anyway." From there the thread turns into a genuinely deep debate among manga readers, Oshii loyalists, and SAC fans. One highly-liked comment insists this isn't "moe-ification" at all — the new anime's take is actually the standard, original-manga Major, and it was Oshii's version that went off in its own, more serious direction. Others push back that they simply prefer the more human, vulnerable Major of the source manga, while Kamiyama's version gets singled out repeatedly as the most rewatchable thanks to its music and visuals. A few manga-first readers admit their honest reaction to first seeing Oshii's 1995 film was less "masterpiece" and more "...wait, this isn't what I signed up for." It all lands on a comment comparing the whole debate to asking someone which "Japanese curry" they prefer, mild or spicy — only for them to reply that neither one is really curry at all, but both are delicious anyway.

Japanese fan reactions (excerpted from 363)

  • Shirow Masamune's original work actually leans heavily comedic to begin with — it was never that dead-serious in the first place.

422 likes
  • I mean, Oshii's version and the other two are basically fan-derivative works at that point.

19 likes
  • It's not 'moe-ification' — the earlier versions just went off and did their own thing until she became basically a different character.

  • This isn't 'moe-ification' at all to begin with — this is the standard. It's the OTHER Majors that got 'serious-ified.'

  • I just really love how human and vulnerable the Major is in the original manga.

  • I mean, who exactly are you calling 'the original' besides... the original?

    そもそも、原作以外が誰だお前?

    @uri-works343 likes
  • I always read the manga Major's expressions as gag-comedy faces, so calling them 'moe faces' just feels off to me.

  • It's more of a Slayers-style tomboy energy than the docile kind of 'moe,' honestly.

  • I've rewatched Kamiyama's version the most — the music and visuals just make it the easiest to sit through as an anime.

  • Oshii Mamoru's personal quirks were honestly a bit too strong in his version.

  • I like every version of the Major, but the manga and this new anime's Major are cute — gorgeous on the outside but she's got old-man energy underneath, and that's great 😊

  • I came in through the original manga, so that's just my personal favorite.

  • The currently-airing version adds a bit more girlish cuteness on top of the manga design, and I'm really into that.

  • Conclusion: it's all Oshii's fault 🥺 and all the new one did was go back to the roots 😗

  • Oshii himself isn't the problem — his diehard fanboys are.

  • Huh??? [Shirow himself, reportedly]: "My work also got changed into a completely different piece. That's Director Oshii's work now, not mine."

15 likes
  • Same with Patlabor honestly — you go into any Oshii Mamoru work expecting 'an Oshii Mamoru film,' full stop.

  • I haven't read the original manga, but if I were a manga-first fan, having it animated closer to the original art would make me happiest — and I bet it's annoying seeing non-readers call it 'moe-ified.'

  • As someone who bought the original comic on release day, my honest reaction to seeing Oshii Mamoru's version was '...wait.' Being generous about it: 'ah, I see, this is one interpretation.' Being honest: 'this isn't what I wanted.'

  • I didn't get it on release day, but I knew the comic first too, and Oshii's version left me with the same 'it's good, but not what I expected...' feeling.

  • There's already a whole cyborg-body-and-ghost concept in this universe, so as long as you don't treat every Major as literally the same person, none of it's actually a problem.

  • Every Major is good! Tsuru Hiromi's version too!

  • It's kind of like asking someone, 'do you prefer mild or spicy Japanese curry?' and an Indian friend replies, 'Japanese curry isn't really curry at all. But it's delicious curry either way.'

FAQ

What sparked this Japanese fan debate about Motoko Kusanagi?
A compilation video lined up Kusanagi's look and personality across the original Shirow Masamune manga, Oshii Mamoru's 1995 film, Kamiyama's Stand Alone Complex, and the new 2026 anime, prompting fans to argue over which version is the 'real' Major.
Why do some fans reject the idea that the new anime's Major is "moe-ified"?
Several highly-liked comments argue it's backwards: the new anime's more human, expressive Major is actually the manga-accurate standard, and it was Oshii's 1995 film that took the character in a more serious, stylized direction that fans later mistook for the default.
What did manga-first readers say about first watching Oshii's 1995 film?
A commenter who bought the original manga on release day described their honest first reaction to Oshii's film as '...wait,' followed by 'oh, I see, this is a different interpretation,' and finally 'honestly, not what I wanted' — a reaction another reader said they shared.
