One Piece: Japanese Fans Revolt Against THE ONE PIECE Remake — "Finish the Manga First"
“A remake of a manga that's literally mid-meltdown and still unfinished — what are they even thinking?”
When THE ONE PIECE — the Netflix-backed remake of the original One Piece anime — dropped its teaser in June 2026, Japan's manga fanbase erupted. The top comment, with 431 likes, called it 'a remake of a manga that's literally mid-meltdown and still unfinished.' The dominant fear wasn't the remake itself but that Oda would use it to retroactively insert Nika-related foreshadowing into the East Blue arc — 'they'll add scenes that never existed and call them foreshadowing.' A second flash point was the aging voice cast: veteran Tanaka Mayumi (Luffy's VA, now in her 70s) reportedly turned it down once before accepting, and fans were furious she was being asked to restart a 1,000-plus episode journey. The sardonic close: 'Can you even call it a remake if the original isn't finished? ...Honestly, in a way, it already is.'

If it had properly concluded and the anime ended years ago, a remake would make sense. This is just baffling.
What I hate is they'll probably shoehorn in all the Nika stuff.
- @doSSun_Thwomp👍 89
Others have said it already but yeah — they'll definitely squeeze it in to make everything 'fit.' That's the nightmare scenario.
They'll insert 'foreshadowing' lol... then go 'this recut is the definitive canon now!'
They will 100% insert Nika and Zaza partway through, then say 'this is actually what I always meant to tell.' Absolutely guaranteed.
Rewriting history! That's terrifying!!
- @AIC-nr6zr👍 34
Shanks saving Luffy — you just know they'll have him smirking now. And then the 'it's foreshadowing!' crowd will lose it. Already disgusted just thinking about it.
They'll add scenes that never existed and call them foreshadowing. You can't foreshadow something you made up later.
Same as the live-action drama — they'll squeeze in pointless 'foreshadowing' and kill the pacing. Gonna be a mess lol.
- @pocchan-921👍 50
They will absolutely add new scenes and give off that 'oh, I planned this all along' vibe...
At this point, no matter what they do with it, it's all just 'yeah yeah, Nika again' to me.
All I wanted was a route to Pirate King with no Nika, no Celestial Dragons. Just the original dream.
This was literally the perfect, legitimate opportunity to transition to a new voice cast without any awkwardness — and yet they're still keeping the same aging actors. I genuinely don't get it.
- @yutasuzu8890👍 107
Doraemon pulling off a full cast refresh due to aging VAs was an extremely rare exception. One Piece just doesn't have that discipline.
- @lzu-Izu👍 72
Tanaka Mayumi herself apparently said 'there's anxiety about restarting at this age' — and they're making her do it anyway.
- @momokosan-s5p👍 13
Mayumi-san is so gracious... When she turned it down the first time, Oda and Shueisha should have understood what that meant.
Clearly not thinking about the VAs at all. Their logic is probably just 'throw more money at them.'
- @kanekihiragi560👍 27
This is not worth stealing time from people who only have so many years left. They literally think money solves everything. VAs, please refuse this.
Starting a 1,000-plus episode anime from scratch... are they really going to grind Tanaka-san for another 10 years? I'm genuinely worried about her.
All these remakes are just wasting animators. There are so many anime that deserve actual sequels and continuations.
The current anime is still airing and now they want a remake too? That's a betrayal. And reusing the same VAs on top of it — exploitation. Real-life Celestial Dragons.
- @user-sl6mr7dy3e👍 25
Can anyone on the inside please leak what's actually happening around Oda? Something must be seriously wrong behind the scenes.
The fact that she declined once is very telling. Age aside, she might genuinely be fed up.
Can you even call it a 'remake' if the original isn't finished? ...Honestly, in a way, it already is.

📺 AnimeAnimeYouTubeOne Piece Chapter 1186: Japanese Fans React — "ONE PIECE Is Dead"
One Piece Chapter 1186 gives Japanese readers the moment they've been waiting for — Luffy lands a hit on the final boss Im — and then immediately cuts to a flashback. The response from Japanese fans was uniformly bleak. Three threads dominated the comment section: the pacing that kills momentum before it can breathe (fans mourning that the era of punches that "carried the feelings of characters and readers alike" is gone for good); Brook's stomach-turning "I changed your diapers" plea that somehow made his protégé stabbing him in the skull feel completely earned; and a silent mid-chapter retcon of a key power slipped in with zero acknowledgment. Voice actor Chō-san collected the most sincere sympathy. The highest-liked comment kept it short: "ONE PIECE is dead. No matter how many times you call out, it won't come back."

📖 MangaMangaYouTubeOne Piece Chapter 1186: Japanese Fans React to Brook's Backstory — "At Sabaody He'd Never Even Heard of Celestial Dragons"
On One Piece Chapter 1186, which continues Brook's tragic Shuri backstory, Japanese readers split hard — and the loudest ones came to roast the continuity. The top comment points out Brook acted like he'd never heard of Celestial Dragons back at Sabaody, yet now he's got this Celestial-Dragon-soaked past; others jab that Lvneel's wings and horns simply vanished from one chapter to the next, and that Oda ignores consistency but hates getting called on it. Plenty were genuinely moved by Shuri's sacrifice and worry for Laboon, but the thread's spine is the continuity debate — right down to a final shot at the fans defending it all.

📖 MangaMangaYouTubeDid Demon Slayer Kill One Piece? Japanese Fans Push Back — "Demon Slayer Didn't Win, One Piece Lost on Its Own"
One Piece fans in Japan turned a viral 'did Demon Slayer kill One Piece?' video into a sharp debate — and the most-liked comments refused to pin it on Demon Slayer at all. The recurring argument was that Demon Slayer is an innocent bystander, that One Piece's real turning point came earlier — when Attack on Titan made 'foreshadowing' and 'payoff' the new hype and One Piece started chasing it — and that the whole rivalry is really a contrast between Demon Slayer author Koyoharu Gotouge's humility and the self-consciousness fans read into Eiichiro Oda. The thread's verdict lands harsher than the video's: nobody beat One Piece — it lost to itself.

📖 MangaMangaYouTubeOne Piece's Art Style Over 27 Years: Japanese Fans React — "Of Course It Changed, You've Been Serializing It Since I Was a Baby"
On One Piece, a Japanese fan thread broke down how Eiichiro Oda's art has shifted across the manga's ~27-year run — early vs mid vs late era — and it turned into an affectionate, nostalgic argument rather than a complaint session. The recurring theme: most of the top comments crowned the mid era (the Water Seven / Enies Lobby look) as peak Oda — thinner lines, the best-balanced faces, the coolest Zoro, Sanji and Luffy designs — while a big camp went to bat for the clean, readable early art and the original Nami and Zoro. The most-liked observation reframed the whole debate with a shrug: he's been drawing this since his readers were literal babies, so of course the style moved. Running underneath it all was the thread's killer gag — that as Oda's drawing skill went UP, Nami's and Nico Robin's apparent "mental age" went DOWN — and a fond roast of how a young Nami once stared down Arlong solo, where today she "just screams." A small minority found the current Elbaf-era art rougher, but the thread landed somewhere warm: the guy was already a monster artist at 22, and most fans just love whichever era they grew up reading.
