• It's different from grade-school morals class, honestly — that kind of lesson only works when both sides are roughly equal and share close enough values. A school lesson would eventually get the aggressor to realize "you got angry and retaliated because they provoked you first," and from there you get a choice: let it go, or hold a grudge. But the siren is too powerful and just too different in values for that phase to ever happen. You could say the perpetrator never got called out, or never got a chance to apologize — either way, that step just doesn't exist here. In the end it's only ever two options: the weak side, Futaba, swallows it and cries alone, or she goes for a reckless revenge like she does in the actual episode.

  小学生の道徳とはまた違うんと思うんですよね、そういうのは立場がある程度対等で価値観がある程度近くないと成立しない。道徳の授業ならばすれ違いはあってもどこかで「貴方が先にやったから相手が怒ってやり返してきました」ってセイレーン側に自覚させる展開があって、その上で収まるか逆恨みか選ぶ選択肢がある。でもセイレーンは強大かつ価値観が違い過ぎてそのフェイズが無い、加害者の立場を踏み倒したとも謝る機会が貰えなかったとも言えるけどとにかくそれが無い。結局の所は二葉という弱者が泣き寝入りするか本編のように無謀な復讐に出るかの2択しかない

• The only solution left is for those two to be punished. Even if the siren really is the reason the mermaids get eaten, there's no way to prove it — there's no evidence. It's just the weak getting devoured for the convenience of the strong, no real reason required. That's basically the law of the world Nagano-sensei draws.
