What Japanese fans actually talk about

We took the 4302 Japanese comments we have translated across 195 articles and sorted them by what they were about. This is not a like-count leaderboard: it ranks titles by how much of their comment section went to a given topic.

Bar length = the share of that title’s comment section. Updated every Monday (JST). The quote under each rank rotates weekly.

Titles Japan praised the craft of

The thickest topic in Japanese comment sections: animation, direction, soundtrack, voice acting. How often a comment went to how the thing was made.

I'm 52, and it's been about 20 years since a show made me go 'wait, it's been 30 minutes already?' The first watch is so engaging I don't even register the direction. It sneaks real history into tiny details too — like the scene where Temuge forgets his own son's name, which quietly implies he had around 80 kids.

In the manga it's drawn leaning right from the recoil right after dodging the car — I think the anime staff just read that as a plain lean and simplified it. This adaptation keeps having these small slips in the details rather than the overall style.

    原作では車をよけた直後に揺り返しで右に傾いた絵なのをアニメスタッフが単純に傾いたと勘違いしたんだろうな。今回のアニメは芸風より細かい部分で作画がチョコチョコ崩れるのが気になる。

I wonder which era of X that footage on the monitor is from. At this point I really want to believe the Takamura personality is gone for good.

    モニターに映ってるのはXのいつの映像だろう さすがに篁人格は消えたと信じたい

Titles that gave Japan chills

The record of being floored — 鳥肌 (goosebumps), 神回 (a god-tier episode), and the rest of the vocabulary Japanese fans reach for when a scene lands.

In Jaadugar, the moment in episode 3 where her face settles into that fully-resolved smile mid-conversation with Shira gave me chills. It felt like standing in the room for the moment a girl became the witch who would later throw Mongolia into chaos.

The whole point of the "five possibilities" bit is to show how insanely prepared Urahara is as a shinigami — not explaining it is the right call. Spelling it out would honestly be nonsense.

    五つの可能性については浦原喜助がいかに用意周到な死神であるかを表現するための描写だから明かさなくて正解 そこを明言するなんてナンセンスにも程がある

How this is counted

The pool is the 195 articles currently published on our English side and the 4302 Japanese comments we excerpted and translated inside them. Nothing is pulled in just for the tally — every comment counted is one you can read in an article.

For each title we only count comments from articles about that title (articles that merely mention it in a comparison do not count). Titles with fewer than 40 comments, or fewer than 5 matches, are left out, so a rank is never decided by a two-comment gap.

Classification is a keyword pass run over both the Japanese original and the English translation, so 「作画がすごい」 and "the animation is insane" count as the same thing. It misses some comments, but everything it counts really does say the word. The headline "1 in N" is just the matches-over-pool ratio rounded, and every row shows the raw counts it came from. No weighting, no adjustment.

We also keep axes for tears, fear, and long-awaited returns, but there are still too few matching comments for those ranks to mean anything, so they are not published yet. They go up once the pool grows.
