The Villager of Level 999 Episodes 1-3: Japanese Fans React — "The Coin-Counting Grind Is Too Real"

When DMM pictures reopened the first three episodes of The Villager of Level 999 for free viewing, Japanese fans turned the replies into a 251-comment mix of nostalgia trip and gripe session — and the single most-liked comment, at 73 likes, wasn't about the story at all. It was about how tedious the loot-collecting animation is. From there, the thread split along generational lines. Viewers who read the original novel over a decade ago — some tracing it back to a school library, others to an old e-novel site — showed up defending the pacing and promising the story gets better in the back half, while newer viewers focused almost entirely on the breakout character Takako. In between, a real argument broke out over the animation itself, with one commenter singling out a scene where background characters look frozen mid-pose. The closest thing to a consensus? Nobody thought the centaur deserved what happened to it in episode 3.

DMM pictures put the first three episodes of The Villager of Level 999 back up for free, timed for anyone who wanted to catch up before the show got further along — and the replies turned into something between a reunion and a review session, with old readers and brand-new viewers arguing past each other in the same thread. Out of 251 comments on the clip, the single most-liked one, at 73 likes, wasn't about the plot at all. It was a joke about the show's own item-collecting animation.

I thought it was nice that you skip the whole 'turn your loot into gold at the guild' hassle... aaand then the coin-drop animation shows up and it's exhausting lol

They said falling weapons are dangerous, but killing a bird mid-air and raining money down is somehow safe? lol

Once the jokes about loot mechanics ran their course, the thread pivoted hard toward Takako, who shows up early and instantly became the character everyone wanted to talk about — to the point that more than one person said she was the reason they kept watching.

Takako seems like the type who'd laugh like 'ko-ko-ko-ko.'

Takako alone locked in my decision to keep watching this anime.

Takako... I can't see her as anything but a hot older guy... oh, sounds like someone's here.

Underneath the Takako jokes, though, was a much older crowd. Several commenters said they'd been reading this story, or the same author's other novel series, for well over a decade, and they showed up less to gush and more to vouch for where the story is eventually headed — insisting the real payoff doesn't land until much later.

I'm honestly floored it's been over a decade since I found Strongest Species Series — the e-novel I got more hooked on than anything else in my life — on Everystar. Different series, but congrats on the anime adaptation anyway!!

Eエブリスタで最強人種シリーズという人生で最もハマった電子小説に出会ってから、もう十数年経った事実に驚いています。別作品にはなりますが、アニメ化おめでとうございます!!

Read the novels. The real story kicks in during the back half, so I really hope they get a second season for that other world. The back half is genuinely great — skipping it would be a waste of a good anime.

小説読みました 後半からが本番なので是非あっちの世界の二期をやってほしいですね 後半はホントに面白いので後半やらないと損なアニメです

Doesn't look like they'll make it to the True World arc — that stretch runs incredibly long.

Not every reaction was about characters or nostalgia, though. Episode 3's centaur scene picked up its own pocket of backlash, and it landed right alongside a separate, more technical complaint from viewers keeping an eye on production values: that the animation itself cuts corners, with background characters visibly frozen mid-pose in some shots.

I think the centaur's relatives have every right to be mad at this anime lol

The background characters are basically frozen mid-pose like time stopped. That's rough.

Plenty of commenters weren't interested in relitigating any of that, though. They were fine calling the plotting convenient and moving on, because the show was working for them regardless.

He's still a dumb hero, sure, but the way he actually seems to respect the other guy's strength — voice acting included — earns him some goodwill from me.

It's incredibly convenient plotting, but it's still totally watchable and fun.

  • Goddamn, this is stupid and hilarious!!! Don't they sell merch figures for this anime? I want one so bad 🔥👍1
  • Takako... my love 💗👍15
  • Genuinely moved they used 'But I refuse' correctly.👍1

Three episodes in, the comment section still can't agree on whether this is a faithful slow burn or a budget-strapped one. But on one point, novel veterans and first-time viewers found rare common ground: whatever that centaur did to deserve getting whipped in episode 3, it wasn't enough to earn what it got.

FAQ

What's the most-liked comment about, and why did it strike a chord?
The top comment (73 likes) jokes that skipping the tedious gold-exchange menu of a typical RPG sounded great, until the show's actual coin-collecting animation turned out to be just as much of a grind — a joke several other commenters piled onto.
Why are Japanese fans so attached to the character Takako?
Multiple commenters say Takako alone was enough to lock in their decision to keep watching, and the jokes about her range from her sound effects to comments about her design reading as an "older guy" rather than a typical heroine.
Did Japanese viewers criticize the anime's animation quality?
Yes — one comment pointed out that background characters appear frozen mid-pose during the coin-drop scene, and it drew 26 likes, putting it among the thread's more popular gripes even as novel readers defended the show's later chapters as worth the wait.

The Villager of Level 999 Episode 1: Japanese Fans React — "Wait, This Isn't a Reincarnation Anime?"

Almost lost interest the second they changed something from the source material. In the novel, he kills the slime with a booger, not a coin. I'll give it a chance for now — but if they change Rex's full name too, I'm done.
