I don't get why the hero picks up a sword hidden in a cave that literally any adventurer (I think?) can walk into, and then apologizes after the princess who shows up later calls him a thief for it. What is this? I was lost from episode one.

So the sword left behind in some ruins just belongs to the royal family, huh (lol). Was there a sign at the entrance, on the sword, or on the pedestal that said 'Property of the Royal Family — Do Not Remove'? Claiming ownership with nothing posted is unreasonable. I mean, it probably really is royal property, but if so, that's poor security on their end, not grounds to reclaim it.

Read the novels. The real story kicks in during the back half, so I really hope they get a second season for that other world. The back half is genuinely great — skipping it would be a waste of a good anime.
