One Piece Chapter 1190: Luffy Snaps at the Man Who Saved Him — Japan Is Furious

One Piece Chapter 1190 has Gaban save Luffy from a near-fatal hit — and Luffy responds by lashing out at him instead of thanking him. A reader-reaction channel built a compilation around the moment, and across 726 comments, one widely-liked line (323 likes) jokes that Luffy — the bearer of the joy-god Nika — has become someone readers would honestly be relieved to see die. The replies underneath spend most of their time comparing this outburst to Luffy's past behavior, and the consensus isn't kind. By the end, several commenters are debating whether this is the lowest a One Piece protagonist has ever been written, and whether Oda is doing it deliberately.

One Piece Chapter 1190 has Gaban stepping in to save Luffy from what should've been a fatal hit — and instead of thanking him, Luffy turns around and lashes out at the man who just kept him alive. A reader-reaction channel built a whole compilation around exactly how badly that single beat is landing, and by the time its 726 comments settle, nobody's really debating plot mechanics anymore. They're just cataloguing how low Luffy can go, chapter after chapter.

"The guy people would honestly be relieved if he died" — and this is supposed to be Nika? lol

That line's far from the angriest one in the thread, though. A few lines down, someone drags up an old, infamous Luffy line from earlier in the series just to point out that this outburst reads as the real thing, not posturing.

This is clearly way more for-real angry than that old "I'm mad now" line ever was — lol

From there the thread pivots to the actual complaint, and it isn't really that Luffy got angry — it's who he got angry at, and why he drew the line where he did.

"Doesn't care if his crew gets hurt, can't forgive being mocked personally" — how much smaller does this protagonist have to get? That's not what a future Pirate King looks like.

Not being able to stand getting mocked makes him the exact opposite of Shanks.

@to5057 Redhair (Shanks): laughs it off when he's the one hurt, but won't forgive it when it's his crew or friends. Whitehair (Whitebeard): flares up when his crew gets hurt, but won't forgive being insulted himself. Same rank of Emperor, and hair color alone explains this much of a personality gap. Kind of curious to see where this goes after the hiatus, honestly.

Not every reply is pure pile-on, though. Some commenters read this less as character assassination and more as Oda quietly landing a thesis statement he's been building toward for a hundred-plus volumes.

100-plus volumes in, and I did not expect anyone to still be lecturing him about "having what it takes to be Pirate King" at this point.

Cackles when allies or random people get hurt, but the second it's him — or someone hits a nerve — no laughing, just lashing out. lol

A few comments go further back into the story for receipts, pulling up lines Luffy himself used to live by — and one viewer even timestamps an old scene where he took a much worse insult without complaint.

Back when the journey started, he told Coby "if I die chasing my dream, that's fine by me" — and now that he's actually near death, he's a mess.

5:55 — remember when Iceburg told him "Pathetic... and you still call yourself a captain?" and he just winced and took it? ...

By this point the comments have basically turned into a running highlight reel of Luffy's worst moments, and the replies keep piling on top of each other rather than moving the conversation anywhere new.

  • There's been plenty of "okay, that's weird" moments before, but this one actually is weird.👍176
  • Genuinely impressive that Oda can write a protagonist this hard to root for at this point. 👀👍30
  • What's wrong? Come on, laugh, Nika... if you can't even laugh anymore, then who even are you?👍78

By the time the comment section runs its course, nobody's really arguing that the writing itself is bad — the actual argument is whether this is the lowest a One Piece protagonist has ever been allowed to sink on the page, and whether Oda is doing it on purpose. Either way, 726 comments deep, "Nika" has quietly become the least reassuring nickname in the entire manga.

No matter how much Observation Haki you've trained, apparently it just gets completely negated the moment you fight Shanks — that's brutal, lol.
