Mushoku Tensei III Episode 11: Old Deus Reveal Has Japan Talking

A supplementary breakdown video for Mushoku Tensei III's Episode 11 goes over material the TV broadcast either skipped or only hinted at — what happens to Atofe after the fight, and a scene cut from the anime entirely. It also confirms something the credits had already given away.

Across the video's 257 comments, the top one (195 likes) is a theory about why the elderly character everyone's calling Old Deus looks healthier on screen than the novels ever described him. From there the section splits between defending that design choice, savoring the voice-actor reveal, and reacting to a much colder scene once a different character reappears later in the episode.

By the end, nobody's still calling last week's near-empty preview a letdown.

A supplementary breakdown video for Mushoku Tensei III's Episode 11 goes over the material the TV broadcast either skipped or only hinted at — what happens to Atofe after the fight, a whole scene cut from the anime version, and a voice-acting reveal the credits had already given away. The channel behind it puts out one of these explainer clips after almost every episode, walking through details easy to miss on a first watch. None of that is what the 257 comments spend most of their time on, though. They're mostly split between arguing over a character's redesigned look and reacting to a much colder scene later in the episode.

Turning Point 4 really did flip everything upside down. All the ease I'd been feeling just got blown away. This is where the real Mushoku Tensei begins.

The single most-liked comment in the section — 195 likes — is a theory about exactly that redesign: the elderly character everyone's calling Old Deus looks healthier on screen than the novels ever described him, and the theory is that it's deliberate, so his decline has somewhere left to go as the story continues.

People are saying a lot about Old Deus's design, but I think next episode is going to show him getting visibly more worn down as he tells his own story — so right now he still looks healthy on purpose. It'll probably get closer to the novel's image as it goes.

In the novels, Old Deus came across as dignified, with the presence of someone clearly powerful. In the anime, he still reads as strong, but there's this shabbiness and melancholy to him too — and I think that's a genuinely great touch.

The character's voice turns out to matter just as much as his face. Once the credits confirmed who was behind Old Deus, the section spent a good stretch just savoring the casting.

Old Deus's voice actor being Sugita? That's hype.

Yep, it was Sugita after all. Had a feeling.

There's a side conversation running the whole time about a completely different character's glow-up — the one everyone used to write off as a doll-obsessed weirdo back in the school arc.

Zanoba was just a doll-obsessed weirdo back in the Academy arc, but he's been carrying his weight ever since the Chaos Breaker arc started — minds his manners as royalty, holds his own as actual muscle, and Perugius has clearly taken a real liking to him.

Zanoba's social game is wild. He's way too good at getting close to powerful people. Ariel's great at being loved by crowds, but this one-on-one stuff clearly isn't her strength.

There's a shorter, much colder detour once Hitogami reappears — a character the thread has mostly treated as comic relief in past episodes.

Hitogami's smile was way too terrifying.

I used to think of Hitogami as just some goofy weirdo, but this appearance had my heart pounding — in a scary way.

It's the middle of summer and I still got insane goosebumps.

The rest of the comments are less about the episode itself and more about the explainer video's whole reason for existing — filling in the gaps between what the anime shows and what the novels actually said, one deleted scene at a time.

Thank you every week — there's so much I wouldn't understand without this breakdown video.

One of my favorite cut bits: before joining Zanoba and the others, he's staring out at the view outside the castle, muttering — half in Kansai dialect — about wanting to take his wife on a date like that someday.

I was watching on BS11, and a Chiba disaster-alert crawler with that obnoxious alarm sound interrupted the broadcast four separate times, so none of it actually sank in. This video really saved me 👍

So much for the preview that promised to show nothing. Once the actual episode aired — and this video filled in everything it left out — the comments had a voice actor to celebrate, a design choice to defend, and one very specific warning for whatever airs next Sunday.
