Dandadan Chapter 238: Aira Shiratori's Growth Arc Is the Best in the Cast

“Okarun and Aira are both way too cool this chapter. Aira, you're a real one. Getting good friends has made her grow the most out of everyone, in every sense. I just want her to land somewhere that feels right to readers and be happy.”
On Dandadan Chapter 238 'Okarun's Resolve', Japanese readers rallied around Aira Shiratori, calling her the character who has grown the most. They traced her arc from bullying Momo to coming back changed, compared her heartbreak-with-dignity to Ai Haibara from Detective Conan, and split over shipping her with Jiji. Mixed in: total confusion over who the new villains even are, relief that Hase is still alive, and a plea for a relationship chart.

Aira is the best, honestly. Even the awful stuff she did to Momo early on was because she genuinely thought Momo was a monster.
— @yuichi0010017 likesFor Aira, Momo is more than just a love rival. Momo is also the one who cracked the fake cutesy shell Aira had built around herself, so her feelings have to be complicated. Thinking back on all of that from the early arcs, this chapter actually made me tear up.
— @juka59597 likesThis chapter's Aira reminds me of Ai Haibara from Detective Conan in the movies. She lost in love but still owns up to it as a comrade, and it's both sad and badass. Jiji's probably headed for the same place someday...
6 likesThat moment where she snaps back from the Akusala state reads like a depiction of heartbreak, I think.
— @I-u4x8v0 likesGood, she basically got rejected but there was no version of Aira who just gives up. If Aira ever gave up on Lord Takakura, Dandadan would lose a huge chunk of its fun.
— @nja26052 likesPersonally I want her to end up with Jiji.
2 likesI get it. Some people will say it's just pairing off the leftovers, but Jiji really is a good guy. Flashy but a genius type who cares about his friends, and Aira who acts all girly on the surface but is actually nurturing and devoted, I think they'd match up pretty well.
— @かなぎ-c3d3 likesThank you for putting into words everything I was thinking lol. Those two are way too good to be called leftovers.
1 likesI just want to see more Okarun and Momo together.
— @Tomo-u3c3b5 likesOh good, so I'm not the only one who can't tell which villain is which.
— @AFCrowley5 likesThere are so many villains now they all look the same to me... And if they need Okarun's power, does that mean he's holding more than just Turbo Granny's power?
— @油性ぺん-h4y1 likesCan't tell who's who? Everyone except Hase and Red Baron is brand new, so what are you even trying to keep track of? They'll probably get taken out fast anyway, just remember the scissors guy (who isn't even in this chapter).
— @Rigidbody.AddForce10 likesJust post a relationship chart already. Hayashi, do your job.
— @speedpusher14861 likesGlad Hase didn't get a redemption arc.
19 likesIt makes me sad how many people forgot Hase even exists...
— @ChonmageRainbow0 likesHonestly we don't need Hase at all.
— @tarotaroza0 likesCalling it: the smoke guy gets his power stolen by Saint-Germain's crew, barely survives, and ends up defecting to Okarun's side.
— @ty-pr1op7 likesRed Baron feels like the vanguard of the Dragenai crew, the weakest among them, but I'm not sure. He's clearly got a rivalry thing going with Saint-Germain.
— @BASIKER2 likesI keep stressing that his clothes are going to get caught in the bike's rear wheel.

A One Piece reader-reaction channel collected fan responses to chapters 1189 and 1190, zeroing in on Brook's dialogue about a character called Gunko, where he calls her "like a daughter to me" moments after telling her he never wanted to see her again. Across 151 comments, the top comment (186 likes) quotes both lines side by side to make the contradiction obvious, and the rest of the thread runs with it — joking that a different writer must be handling Brook scene to scene, or that he's secretly been swapped for someone else. A handful of fans push back on the jokes just to say, sincerely, that they like this character and the recent writing makes them sad to watch.

On July 29, a Japanese manga-reaction channel posted a video about a confusing line from One Piece Chapter 1189, one Shueisha has now confirmed will be reworded for the print volume. Across 324 comments, the top reply (342 likes) needled Oda's grammar directly. From there, the thread split into two tracks: readers trying to guess what Oda actually meant to say, and readers pivoting to blame the editorial team for letting it through in the first place. It ends on a joke nobody quite let go of — one about an entire fictional family that apparently can't tell its own sons apart.

On the newest Hunter x Hunter chapter, Japanese fans flooded a reaction video the moment Gon and Killua reappeared on the page after Yoshihiro Togashi's infamous hiatus — across 488 comments, the top-liked entry (2,615 likes) needed just one comparison to an entire other franchise's full run to land the joke. The comment section turns the length of the wait into its own genre of joke: one fan lists nineteen separate manga that fully started and ended in the gap, others do the math against Dragon Ball's eleven-year run and come out shaken, and one comment darkly notes there's no guarantee Togashi or anyone reading will even be alive for the next installment. Once the shock wears off, the thread pivots to Togashi's art style itself — fans joke that he's forgotten how to draw Gon, compare the new linework to an English textbook illustration, and half-seriously credit his wife with inking Killua's suddenly gorgeous eyes. Underneath the jokes, though, several comments genuinely well up at what the reappearance does in-story, including a moment about a queen quietly recognizing Kurapika's sincerity that one commenter calls flat-out unfair after so many chapters of dense political scheming — before the thread lands on one last punchline about just how long 14 years really is.

Why Japanese Anime Keeps Winning: What Japan's Own Comment Sections Give Away
Ask why Japanese anime is so hard to beat and the answer usually comes back as a pile of nouns. Budgets. Sakuga. I spend my nights reading and translating Japanese comment sections, a few thousand at a time, and from that side of the glass the answer sits much further upstream. Not in the show you streamed. In everything that got cut before it ever reached you. That part never shows up on a timeline.
