Chainsmoker Cat (ヤニねこ; Yanineko in ANN's listing) Season 1 runs 12 episodes. It premiered on July 2, 2026 in TOKYO MX and BS11's Thursday 24:30 JST slot, which is 00:30 on Friday by the calendar, and Episode 12 is the finale, in the Thursday, Sept. 24 slot (00:30 on Friday, Sept. 25 in Japan). TOKYO MX's episode listing and the official site's story page both title that episode 「ニャーは最終回でもヤニを吸うにゃ」, roughly "Nya smokes even in the final episode," so the show calls it the final episode (最終回) itself. ANN's encyclopedia and Netflix list 12 episodes as well; the official site doesn't print a total.

The weekly run has one gap. On Aug. 27 the slot went to a cast special, 「今日だけキレイなヤニねこ特番」, so Episode 9 moved to Sept. 3 and everything after it shifted by a week. That's why you may see Sept. 17 given for Episode 12 on some schedule sites: we couldn't confirm that date, and it doesn't account for the special. TOKYO MX's own listing puts Episode 12 on Sept. 24. The show also exists in two cuts: the On-Air version made for terrestrial TV, and the uncut 邪竜解放版 ("Evil Dragon Unleashed" in ANN's English), which runs on AT-X (Saturdays at 24:30 from July 25) and on six streaming services in Japan, Netflix and Hulu among them.

The anime adapts Nyan Nyan Factory's manga, which is still running in Kodansha's Young Magazine; Volume 13 came out in Japan on Aug. 6, 2026, and Seven Seas publishes the series in English. Outside Japan, the anime streams on Netflix and OceanVeil in the US, with OceanVeil carrying the uncut version according to ANN. Not every region kept it: ANN reported in August that Ani-One Asia removed it from its lineup.

How Japan watched Season 1

Our translated comment sections start with the Episode 2 preview, which introduced Yaku-neko (roughly "Junkie Cat"), Yani's drug-using junior from next door. Viewers treated the show less like a gag anime and more like a live test of what overseas platforms would still let through, and that running joke never really went away.

“This episode feels like a threshold test for whether it gets cut or censored overseas 💉”

海外で切られるか改変されるかの境界値試験みたいな回だな💉

— @佐藤剛-r5lFrom: Chainsmoker Cat Episode 2 Preview Introduces 'Junkie Cat' — What Japan Said

What kept people watching, though, wasn't the shock value. It was the cast. The Episode 3 preview introduced Kansai-neko, whose jokes miss so reliably that the comments started treating the bombing as a skill. The landlord turned into the comment sections' favorite adult. One viewer admitted going in expecting him to be the character who made them angry; after he let a tenant who was behind on rent off with some weeding, then handed her a drink and snacks, the thread called him a saint. In Episode 6, when the hard-drinking housemate Aru-neko's enormous hair goes up in flames (Yani-neko's doing, and she lights a cigarette off it), he's the one who bursts in to help put it out, and the thread spent more time on him than on the fire.

“An anime stacked with beautiful female characters, and somehow the one you end up rooting for is the old landlord.”

The voices got just as much attention. The Episode 6 preview handed a new cat character, Penpen-neko, to Yuu Kobayashi, whose delivery goes completely unhinged partway through, and the comments knew it was her the moment she opened her mouth. The Episode 7 preview finally showed Shizue, the heroine's long-mentioned mother, and the thread was already calling her the season's "final boss" based on how the opening frames her, while raving about her voice.

“There's no hiding that it's Yuu Kobayashi, lol”

Then there was the question of how far the anime would go. One commentary channel's breakdown pointed out that the adaptation spells out drug details the manga kept vague (Yaku-neko's syringe turns up hidden in Aru-neko's hair), and the comments treated that as the joke, not a mistake. The same instinct showed up again with the Episode 11 opening. The official channel posted its non-credit version right after that night's broadcast, with the usual singers swapped and one line bleeped, and fans promptly dubbed the bleep "sealing away the evil dragon." The uncut version, remember, is the one called "Evil Dragon Unleashed."

“You always see adaptations tone things down for TV — this is the first time I've seen one crank it up, lol”

The Aug. 27 special gave the season its one gap, and the comments made a bit out of that too: under the Episode 9 preview, which landed after the week off, the joke was that a show about nicotine had put its own viewers through withdrawal. The dread of the real ending started early. Someone under the Episode 6 preview was already scared of the emptiness once it stops airing, and by the Episode 10 preview the thread had turned into a Season 2 campaign. People promised to buy the manga, one offered to buy Japan Tobacco stock, and someone else told them to calm down.

“A rare anime that made its viewers experience nicotine withdrawal for real, by losing a week of broadcast to a TV special.”

“Chainsmoker Cat is basically the only thing keeping me going right now, I genuinely can't cope without it. Please, a season 2, for real...”

ヤニねこでギリ生きて行けてるからヤニねこないと耐えられんて、2期まじでやってくれ……

— @Yuuhi-cr7From: Chainsmoker Cat Episode 10 Preview Has Japan Begging for Season 2

So the Japanese side of this season was a comment section that kept checking how much the show could get away with, and then, near the end, started asking for more of it.

FAQ

How many episodes does Chainsmoker Cat have?
Season 1 has 12, all in one weekly run from July 2 to Sept. 24, 2026, apart from the week of Aug. 27, when a cast special took the slot. ANN's encyclopedia and Netflix list 12 episodes, and the official site's title for Episode 12 uses the word 最終回 (final episode).
What time is the Chainsmoker Cat finale in Japan?
Episode 12 is in TOKYO MX and BS11's Thursday 24:30 JST slot on Sept. 24, which is 00:30 on Friday, Sept. 25 by the calendar. The official site says streaming in Japan starts from 25:00 JST (1:00 on Friday morning), when the broadcast ends, and rolls out on Netflix and the other services one by one.
Is there a Chainsmoker Cat Season 2?
No second season has been announced. The newest items on the official site's news page (Sept. 25) are about a Blu-ray BOX, the original soundtrack's streaming release and a music video for a cast version of the opening theme, and the newest news item on ANN's encyclopedia entry (Aug. 20) is about Ani-One Asia pulling the show; neither mentions a sequel. The source manga is still running in Kodansha's Young Magazine.
Where can I watch Chainsmoker Cat (Yani Neko)?
In the US, on Netflix and OceanVeil; ANN reports that OceanVeil streams the uncut "Evil Dragon Unleashed" version. In Japan the official site lists many services, and the uncut version is on AnimeFesta, DMM TV, FOD, Hulu, Netflix and Anime Times. We haven't checked other countries one by one.
Why was there no Chainsmoker Cat episode on Aug. 27?
That slot aired a cast special, 「今日だけキレイなヤニねこ特番」, and Episode 9 moved to Sept. 3. The announcements we found don't give a reason for the change.
