Draw This, Then Die!: Japanese Fans React to Summer 2026's Most Overlooked "Hegemon" — "I've Ugly-Cried Through Every Episode"
I ugly-cried through episodes 2 and 3 as well. The whole show is just soaked in genuine love for manga. This season has so many buzzy titles that this one's genuinely at risk of getting buried, which is such a shame. I really want as many anime fans as possible to give this a chance.

Across 181 comments on a Japanese anime-review channel's episode roundup, fans are building a genuine case that Draw This, Then Die! — a quiet manga-drawing coming-of-age story — deserves a seat at the table for Summer 2026's "hegemon" (season champion) title. The top comment (37 likes) says its author ugly-cried through both episodes 2 and 3 and worries the show is "absolutely being buried" under this season's flashier titles. The recurring theme is how hard the show hits despite modest character designs: commenters trace the tears back to the teacher character's backstory of genuine passion for manga, the students' own clumsy first attempts at drawing, and a title-payoff moment in episode 3 that several fans call "no joke." A side thread praises voice actor Akira Sekine, who's also playing Sitara in Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia this season, as this season's stealth MVP. It closes on a comment that quietly ties the whole thread back together: even the opening theme, fans say, is hegemon-tier.

  • There are a lot of strong contenders for this season's "hegemon" title, but I think Draw This, Then Die! deserves a seat at that table too.

  • It's rare to find a show that moves you to tears three episodes running.

  • This show gives you both the realistic side of someone who's already been through "drawing manga" — the teacher — and the excitement of the high schoolers about to take it on for the first time. Both sides hit you emotionally.

  • Haven't watched it myself yet, but my husband — who's already caught up — said every single episode leaves him thinking "thank you." Now I'm curious, guess I'll check it out too.

  • The character design, especially the shape of the protagonist's mouth, kind of looks like something out of CoroCoro Comic, and yet I got completely absorbed anyway. Actually — maybe it's exactly because of that design that it works.

  • I've been crying since episode 1 too. Even if it's a manga that flopped and got cancelled — if someone came up to you in tears saying "this book changed my life," as the author, I'd absolutely lose it.

  • I thought this channel was all about Saga of Tanya the Evil! (Haven't watched it myself.) I'm only two episodes into Draw This, Then Die!, but the moment the teacher broke down crying after finishing her manga in episode 2, I lost it too. The passion, the sense that she genuinely, truly loves manga — that's what gets you.

  • Teared up a little in episode 1, a little in episode 2, a little in episode 3 too. It's not like I've had a similar experience or ever poured that kind of passion into something myself — I just love that every episode, someone works up the courage to take one more step forward.

  • Back in my day I was serious about judo, riding motorcycles at night, listening to late-night radio while drawing manga and illustrations and building plastic models. Beat up and exhausted, I gave up a judo scholarship to university, went to animation school against my parents' wishes, became an animator, and joined a circle at Comiket back in the Harumi days. I think it took that inner fire burning inside me to make it happen. Watching this, the tears just came on their own.

  • There's a real thrill in feeling the show's craftsmanship tighten up more and more as it goes.

  • Partway through episode 1 I thought "what is this" and nearly dropped it, but then the reveal of who the teacher really is made me stick with it, and episode 2's story of her finishing her manga was great too. Then I watched episode 3 this morning. The teacher's backstory really got to me. Everyone falls hard for something at some point, and for the teacher it was manga — being able to just throw yourself in fully like that is a privilege of youth. And then the title finally pays off. Now I'm curious what happens next.

  • In episode 3's B-part, watching Teshima-sensei struggle really hit hard... that title-payoff episode was no joke.

  • The moment I saw the fictional manga volumes lined up on the shelf, I went "okay, great taste, I'm watching every episode!"

  • It was lovely how Kokoro-chan, who struggles to put her feelings into words, shouted her manga character's line "I'll join you!" out loud. (Kind of reminds me of Shizuka-chan from 100 Girlfriends?) Between this and her role as Sitara in Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, Akira Sekine is absolutely this season's MVP voice actor!

  • It does a great job showing how someone faces their passion for the thing they love, in a way that's easy to connect with. No weird fan-service or exposure either, so it'd probably air fine even on NHK.

  • The way it used the White-Faced Demon (Ushio and Tora) and Esidisi (JoJo) references was so well done, I laughed out loud. Personally I think the gag scenes land really well too — a solid mark. Even while dropping in jokes, it still delivers a serious gut-punch of an ending afterward. Just like you said, the double-protagonist structure hits hard on both sides and pulled me right in emotionally. Episode 3, in particular, used its 24 minutes better than almost anything else airing this season.

  • This show and Jaadugar are the only two I'm watching this season. Both episodes 2 and 3 had me in tears — though even faithful to the source material, I couldn't help worrying whether the Parasyte and JoJo references actually land with the average viewer, lol.

  • The main story's great, obviously, but it's also just fun catching every single manga reference sprinkled in between. Going from White-Faced Demon to Ryoko Tamiya straight into Lord Esidisi is devastatingly good.
