The passage of time isn't tracked only through Sitara either; they weave in things like a woman who couldn't adapt to Mongol life gradually settling in. The craft is genuinely fine-grained. It makes you feel like you're watching a taiga drama.

• Jaadugar is reliably excellent; it's my personal number one this season and I don't see a future where it falls apart. For reference, in that period Japan was in the Kamakura era. Mushoku Tensei is fun too, but I'd like to see a turning point soon. Grow Up Show feels disjointed — compared to Sayonara Lala, the other original anime this season, that one has a director building toward something he wants to make, and next to it, it doesn't hold up…

• The backgrounds in Draw This, Then Die! are so good. I grew up by the sea, so they hit me. I dropped Caramelize. I like the unexpected plot, but it looked like it was heading for a been-there romcom… I just watched Future Boy Conan on YouTube, so I'd rather spend my time revisiting old classics. "Jaadugar" is overwhelming. Between this and The Heike Story, I bow to SARU! I want to ask my friends who studied Persian and Mongolian what they think, but they aren't watching it, so I'm hard-selling them on it.

• "Draw This" is textbook club-activity manga if you look at the shape of it, but what's great is that things get solved by the protagonist's pure love for the thing and her urge to create, not by kids being clever. A perfect example of why you don't judge by the art or the title. Genuinely great work.

• Of the last year's shows, Draw This, Then Die! and Ruri no Houseki are unbelievably good at depicting obsession — the fixation people have on the thing they love. I like gemstones as monetary value but have zero interest in stones themselves, and I love reading manga but have no interest in drawing it. And even I end up understanding what's great about gems and about manga. These authors are amazing.

• People keep misreading this, but it's less that Dara-san killed the YouTuber and more that the YouTuber was already cursed, and if he'd been left like that the curse would have spread everywhere and killed a lot of people — so he got collected before that happened.

• Hell Mode is as good as ever. The way he can look out for his companions' families is his past-life adult perspective actually paying off. And now that his companions have grown strong, a gap is starting to open up — because he's on Hell Mode, there'll be moments where he falls a little behind, and that's fun to think about too.

• Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia is too good. With Mushoku Tensei, Rudeus being creepy is old news at this point; what I love is the little sister using the sacred object to blackmail him. The World Is Dancing was a hopeless mismatch for me. No matter how many times the fans tell me "it's not the kind of show where you're meant to relate to the protagonist," a protagonist I find that unpleasant shows up every single episode, so I can't get interested in the story…

• As someone who loves animation that moves like it was scribbled out in one go, I think it depends entirely on where you use it. I also hate it when you can see the intent — "look, we let a famous animator burn frames here, please make it go viral." But for episode 2 of "Dancing," showing that the protagonist saw something shocking should naturally come with an expression that is itself shocking, so that's a pass from me. If you drew that scene neatly with clean lines, I don't think you'd get much past "huh, a carefully drawn dance."

• What Oni no Hanayome (dropped after episode 1) and Uchi no Otouto-domo ga Sumimasen (dropped this time after episode 2) have in common is that with both of them I'd already seen up to the episode where they got cut, at an advance screening. Including the show that had three episodes screened last Saturday, my impression after every one of them was "well, that happened." Lately I can't shake the feeling that advance screenings happen because "there's nothing to sell but the voice actors' stage greetings and the publicity." And the painful part of all this is that I have to keep watching, no matter how much of a slog it is, just so I can leave comments on the host's "Biggest Disappointment of the Season" video.
