Re:Zero Season 4: Julius's Duel Splits Japanese Fans Over a Shuffling Walk Cycle

A recent Re:Zero Season 4 duel gave Julius Juukulius a big, dramatic power-up moment — and then, a few seconds later, undercut it with a walk cycle so stiff and shuffling that fans immediately nicknamed it "toko-toko" (the sound of tiny, mincing footsteps).

Across 667 comments on a fan-run reaction upload, the section splits almost evenly: one side insists the animation team simply didn't have the schedule to smooth it out and that armchair critics should back off, while the other lays out, shot by shot, why the camera work and character motion never quite matched up. A few just admit they've grown fond of the shuffle either way.

By the end, one of the loudest defenders of the scene turns out to be someone who was laughing at it the whole time.

This one's a Re:Zero Season 4 duel that gives Julius Juukulius a big, dramatic power-up beat — the kind of scene built to get a reaction. It gets one, just not the one it was going for. A few seconds after the awakening moment, a shot of Julius closing the distance on his opponent uses a walk cycle so stiff and mincing that fans immediately nicknamed it "toko-toko" — basically the sound effect for tiny shuffling footsteps. A fan-run reaction channel uploaded the broadcast clip with its own running commentary rather than just reposting the episode raw, and its 667 comments spend the whole thread arguing about whether that one walk cycle wrecked an otherwise dramatic scene, or just became an accidental joke that everyone ended up loving anyway. Neither side backs down for long.

“People saying "just fix it before release" like it's obvious are missing the point — there wasn't time to fix it, that's exactly why it turned out like this.”

That's the defensive camp: production realities are what they are, and a walk cycle lasting barely a second isn't worth the pile-on in their view. But plenty of other commenters weren't complaining out of principle at all — they were just laughing at how sudden the tonal whiplash was.

“The sword's-eye-view horizontal slash was genuinely great — I was going "whoa!" watching it live. But yeah, "Julius doing the toko-toko" is fair too, lol.”

“That intense Julius awakening gave me chills — and then the sluggish fight that followed smoothed all the goosebumps right back down.”

From there the thread turns technical, with a few commenters trying to pin down exactly what felt off about the scene beyond the walk cycle itself — camera work, pacing, and how the two interact.

“The second I saw it I thought, "wait, is this actually about to fall apart?" — couldn't accept it, and then the fight was just over before I processed it.”

“Here's what bugged me about the animation. · Motion was prioritized over detail, so the linework stays thin for long stretches (not a problem on its own, but it feels off once combined with the points below). · The camera and background move a lot to sell speed, but the character's own movement is slow — that mismatch feels contradictory. · Long, unbroken takes — the kind of continuous camera move you see in tokusatsu, without cutting between shots — stack on top of that contradiction, which is probably why it felt like a long stretch of 'wait, is this fight fast or slow?' · The character's movement leans toward realistic physics (not a bad thing by itself, but it's such a different style from the rest of the show that a lot of people were probably thrown off). I think the toko-toko walk is where all of this showed up the most. The animation itself was clean, but something about it just felt off.”

“For what it's worth, the reason this is catching heat isn't just the animation slip — it's that on top of it, the structure cut a lot of the source material's better scenes.”

Not everyone piling on was actually mad, though — a fair number were just describing a vague feeling they couldn't quite pin down, and the schedule defense kept coming back around.

“I don't know anything about animation production, but it's just been "something, something feels off" the whole time.”

アニメの技術とかがわからんけど、ずっと「なんか、なんかおかしい」なんだよね

“There just wasn't the time, so it can't be helped... honestly it was an unreasonable ask to begin with.”

時間がないから仕方ないんだよ…流石に無茶

And after a full comment section of arguing over whether it was a technical failure or a scheduling casualty, plenty of people land in the same place: annoyed for about five seconds, then weirdly fond of it.

“Glad it's not just me. It was kind of like "whoa... whooaaa!! whoa, huh? ...oh" — but I ended up satisfied either way. Personally, I love Julius's toko-toko walk.”

自分だけじゃなくてよかった なんか 「おぉ…おおおお!!おお、、?お〜」って感じで最終的には満足した ユリウストコトコ個人的には大好き

So the studio didn't get the smooth version of the scene out the door, and the comment section knows exactly why. But nobody's actually demanding a refund of their goosebumps. A shuffle that started as a punchline about rushed schedules ends up, a few hundred replies later, as one more thing this fandom has decided to just adopt.

FAQ

Why are Japanese fans talking about Julius's walk animation?
In a recent Re:Zero Season 4 duel, Julius gets a dramatic power-up buildup, but the follow-up shot of him closing the distance uses a stiff, shuffling walk cycle that fans nicknamed "toko-toko" — and the comment section split over whether it ruined the moment or was just a funny quirk.
Do most commenters think the animation is bad?
It's split. Several point to specific technical issues — thin linework, a moving camera against a slow-moving character, and long unbroken takes — while just as many argue the team was working under a tight schedule and that viewers have gotten overly critical of minor imperfections.
Did anyone actually end up liking the shuffling walk?
Yes — several commenters, including some who were laughing at it moments earlier, say they've grown attached to it, with one writing they personally love "Julius's toko-toko" by the end of the thread.
