TOHO animation's official channel dropped the theatrical trailer for the first Apothecary Diaries movie, confirming its December release and revealing who wrote the theme song: Kenshi Yonezu. Japanese fans weren't really talking about the trailer's footage -- they were talking about Yonezu.
The reaction isn't debate so much as a long list of receipts: commenters started naming every past anime and movie theme Yonezu's written, pointing out that his sound somehow fits a mystery-and-poison period drama just as well as it fit a chainsaw-wielding action film or a Studio Ghibli epic.
TOHO animation's official channel dropped the full theatrical trailer for the first Apothecary Diaries movie, confirming the December theatrical release date and revealing who wrote the theme song: Kenshi Yonezu. The comment section barely touched the trailer's visuals. Almost every reply was about one thing -- that one of Japan's biggest working songwriters had signed on for yet another anime project, and that his sound already matched the show's mood before anyone had even heard a full verse of the new song.
Classic Kenshi Yonezu. His sound design nails the show's atmosphere perfectly.
What kept coming up wasn't "is this song good," it was "of course it's good, it's him." Commenters pointed to Yonezu's growing list of anime and movie theme credits -- Chainsaw Man, 5 Centimeters per Second, and Kingdom among them -- as proof he reliably writes something that fits whatever world he's handed, mystery-and-poison period drama included. A couple of replies went further back, bringing up his Jujutsu Kaisen movie theme from the year before and his theme for The Boy and the Heron, framing the new announcement as the same pattern repeating itself, show after show, without him ever settling into one signature sound.
Kenshi Yonezu's movie theme songs: Chainsaw Man, 5 Centimeters per Second, Kingdom, and now the Apothecary Diaries...! It's the best feeling, getting a work you love interpreted by an artist you love.
Kenshi Yonezu is amazing. His songs fit any anime's theme.
Can you believe it? Last year this same guy was screaming "I love you" out of a slit throat for IRIS OUT. And now this. Too beautiful.
His JoJo ending theme reminded me of this again -- writing a song that fits the source material perfectly isn't something you can take for granted. Every single time, Kenshi Yonezu's melody and lyrics are both excellent.
I thought the same thing during "Chikyuugi." This guy is way too good at writing melodies that get better the more you listen to them.
Not everyone saw it coming, though. Several commenters admitted they were caught off guard that Yonezu specifically was attached to a series built around poisons and court medicine, and more than one joked that a gentle love-song title landing right after a poison-soaked mystery series felt almost too fitting for its own good. One reply couldn't square those soft new lyrics with the far blunter ones Yonezu's written for other projects, and said so outright, half-laughing at the contrast.
I genuinely didn't see Kenshi Yonezu doing the theme song coming... Really looking forward to both the song and the movie now!!
Official: "How about this for the theme song?" Us: "This... is poison."
"Gero" and "Haru ga Tomori" -- I can't believe the same person wrote both sets of lyrics 😂
I was already looking forward to the movie, and then the theme song got announced on top of it -- my excitement maxed out and broke straight through the ceiling! Yonezu is seriously incredible at making a song that amplifies a work's whole atmosphere.
This feels like exactly the kind of incredible song that'll also go over huge with foreigners who are into Japan.
By the end of the thread, the discussion wasn't really about this one movie anymore. It had turned into a very familiar bit on the Japanese side of the internet: marveling, once again, that this one songwriter keeps doing this, project after project, genre after genre, without ever once landing on the wrong note for the room.
The Apothecary Diaries Movie Drops a New Character PV Ahead of Its Dec. 11 Release
If Jinshi just says "Maomao, want to go on a trip?" they can make one of these every single year — that's an unbeatable formula.

Apothecary Diaries Mini-Anime Episode 50: The 'Fireproof Robe' Is Actually Asbestos
The Apothecary Diaries Season 3's long-running mini-anime, "Maomao's Monologue," hit episode 50 on October 12 with a story about a legendary "fireproof cloth" from a foreign land — and the comment section spent most of its time pointing out that the real-world material behind that cloth is asbestos. A Japanese reaction clip built around the episode drew 172 comments, and the single most-liked one (225 likes) is the blunt observation that a robe woven from asbestos "sounds terrible for your health." From there, commenters traded historical trivia about the toxic fiber, a joke connecting the episode's riddle to the Kaguya-hime folktale, and plenty of love for Maomao's trademark deadpan delivery and Jinshi's now-casual habit of calling her by name. Editor's note: "Maomao's Monologue" is a recurring short-form mini-anime that airs alongside The Apothecary Diaries' main episodes, following the same characters in lighter, slice-of-life moments.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 49: Fans Call Grimmjow the Real Protagonist
Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War's Episode 49 gives Grimmjow its biggest spotlight of the final arc: with the Hueco Mundo battle on the ropes, a badly wounded Harribel tells him to consume her power and get stronger, the same shortcut other Espada have taken before -- and he turns her down, winning the fight on his own resurrección alone. The episode's reaction thread ran to 135 comments, and one heavily-liked reply, with 254 likes, admits the first reaction was simpler: disappointment that Grimmjow didn't finally unlock his long-teased second-release form, Segunda Etapa. But most of the thread pushes back on that wish once it works through why the writers chose otherwise. A few comments widen the frame to the rest of Hueco Mundo's weakest fighters, but the verdict on Grimmjow himself settles fast.

Dragon Ball Super: Beerus Fans Reject a Viral Fan-Animation Comparison
A Japanese reaction channel built a video around a side-by-side: the new Dragon Ball Super: Beerus remake's Super Saiyan transformation fight against a fan-made redrawing of the same scene, framed as a question of which one actually looks better. The channel's own comment section ran to 178 posts, and its single most-liked reply -- 547 likes, more than three times the next-highest -- didn't pick a side at all. It called the entire comparison absurd given how differently the two pieces were made, and dozens of replies piled on to make the same point: the fan animator had no broadcast deadline and no season to finish, while Toei's team had to deliver an entire cour on schedule. A few commenters broke from the pile-on to admit the fan version's camerawork was genuinely sharp -- but the thread's last word wasn't really about the animation at all.

ColumnAnimer/anime(朝日新聞の鈴木敏夫インタビューをAUTOMATON WESTが英訳した記事のスレッド)
Ghibli's Producer Waited Out the Ghibli-Style AI Trend. What Slop Sounds Like in Japanese.
Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki turned down every interview request during the Ghibli-style AI image boom, because he figured people would get bored of it on their own. He said so in an interview with Asahi Shimbun, AUTOMATON WEST put it into English, and it landed on r/anime. I opened that thread expecting a fight, since I read these comment sections every night for a living. Almost nobody was fighting. Here is what that thread actually said, what happens to the word slop when I carry it into Japanese, and why the Miyazaki line about an insult to life itself keeps getting attached to the wrong thing.
