Jujutsu Kaisen: When Will the Gojo vs. Sukuna Movie Release? Japan Weighs In

“I need to see Gojo vs Sukuna so bad. I can't die until I've seen it — I'll drag my skeleton to the movie theater if I have to.”
A Japanese anime-theory YouTuber's deep dive into when the Jujutsu Kaisen movie adaptation of the Gojo vs. Sukuna fight might actually release sent Japanese fans into a frenzy of box-office math and production-schedule detective work. The recurring theme in the comments was equal parts hype and patience: fans openly rooting for MAPPA to push the release back a full year rather than repeat the brutal crunch that hit Attack on Titan's staff, while others traded detailed theories about splitting the final arc into two or even three separate films, citing Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle's box office run as the bar to clear. One commenter even laid out an insider-level breakdown of how MAPPA rotates staff between Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man to explain the gap between seasons. Stick around for the joke about just how far into the future fans are already resigned to waiting.
Japanese fan reactions (excerpted from 122)
I want it in 2027, but honestly I'd rather they take until 2028 and make it right for the animators' sake. Attack on Titan looked brutal on the staff too.
— @ドラココ-o8s71 likesEven if it's 2028, that's fine — just make it properly.
37 likesDemon Slayer got its final battle turned into a movie too. I want to see MAPPA go all-out on the big screen to answer ufotable.
— @ザビエル-zav3 likesRealistically this might be the only Japanese theatrical content left that could beat Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle's $800 million worldwide gross. There's no other contender coming up.
TypeC13 likesFeels like this basically has to be a movie... even the TV anime already has movie-level animation and music. Watching it barely feels different from watching a film.
— @no-n5j28 likesEasily a billion dollars. I might go see it five times.
— @クリリンモンロー-p8h1 likesAt this point we might get three separate movies out of the final arc.
— @Dadada_820 likesSo like: part 1 is Sukuna vs. Gojo, part 2 is Kenjaku vs. Takaba, part 3 is Sukuna vs. the Jujutsu High crew?
— @ゾルタンアッカネン-h2z3 likesJujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man run on the same MAPPA production line — it goes roughly JJK S1 → JJK 0 → Chainsaw Man S1 & JJK S2 → Chainsaw Man Reze arc → JJK S3. Because Chainsaw Man S1 and JJK S2 were basically made at the same time, they ended up fighting over resources, and it caused serious labor issues. Since then MAPPA changed how they staff things, splitting a core crew between the two shows — production is healthier now, but it also means bigger gaps between releases. The two PVs shown at the recent MAPPA stage event were actually made differently too: Chainsaw Man's was animated purely for the PV, while Jujutsu Kaisen's just pulled together whatever was already finished to final quality (they tend to finish the big showcase scenes early). Going by that, if JJK Season 4 airs first — say, January 2027 — Chainsaw Man Season 2 probably lands somewhere between fall 2027 and summer 2028. And if the Shinjuku Showdown really does become a movie, my guess is 2029–2030.
— @エナジー-p4m17 likesThere's a real chance they do it on December 24th next year, just to keep the Gojo-is-back momentum going. People keep saying the schedule's brutal and the working conditions are rough, but Season 3's quality was rock solid and I never heard anything but positive things from the animators — so I think they've actually got a handle on it this time. If it were still the bad old crunch days, they probably would've just crammed the Culling Game into two cours back to back.
— @Salmon_Trout6 likesI remember hearing overseas fans were already saying ages ago that this was definitely getting a movie. Guess they were right.
— @Rex9991-r3z0 likesI want Gojo vs. Sukuna to get the movie treatment. If they load it up with enough bonus content, I think it could pull in $2 billion.
— @vstar67540 likesSince reinforcements jump in the second someone loses, there's no clean place to cut it, and it's basically nonstop fight scenes — a movie version of this arc would be pretty unusual no matter how they slice it. Honestly I think this arc suits a movie worse than Demon Slayer or Chainsaw Man did, and the manga's flavor comes through better on TV. That said, they'll 100% still do some kind of compilation movie regardless.
— @user-fv1nu5vj6d1 likesNo question, this is the flagship series everyone wants adapted most right now — the hype is off the charts. Honestly, why isn't there some kind of tip-jar business model where fans can just throw money straight at the animation studios? Somebody build that already.
— @Ryo_kk_ei0 likesThe movie can cover the final battle, sure, but I want an original story afterward too.
— @SHgenki0 likesI can actually picture the Gojo vs. Sukuna movie pretty vividly — it ends with Gojo winning, roll credits. Maybe during the credits there's an airport scene, then it closes on some dialogue explaining what happened after. Not saying I'm sure about any of this, just what popped into my head.
— @beck86853 likesPersonally calling it now: three movies, Demon Slayer style.
— @SLD2361 likesBoth the manga readers and the anime-onlys want Gojo vs. Sukuna as a movie, no question!!!
— @daedae0p1 likesMaybe they do the Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle treatment and turn both the Gojo vs. Sukuna fight and Sukuna's final-form fight into movies too? Just guessing though.
— @Element-1g0 likesWould love to see the Sukuna fight get the movie treatment.
— @はるはる-l2f7d0 likesIf it's December 24, 2028, the animation staff should be able to handle it without burning out. I'd rather they leave about a year of breathing room so the animators have the time and energy to do Gojo vs. Sukuna justice.
— @しんのすけ-v4d9p5 likesI want to see it, but thinking about how it ends makes me sad.
0 likesWatching it in a real movie theater would hit so much harder.
— @KAZ-b9z8 likesBy the way, the next December 24th that actually falls on a Friday is in 2032 lol (I won't live that long, honestly). Deep respect to everyone at MAPPA — really glad they're keeping the Jujutsu Kaisen momentum going while the hype is still hot.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Gojo vs Sukuna — Fans Favor Sukuna 6-8 Out of 10
“At the airport, Gojo himself says it was "doubtful he'd have won even without the Ten Shadows." That's the whole debate right there, honestly.”

Jujutsu Kaisen fans in Japan were handed a serious fan-theory video — "the reason Naoya Zenin was born is that Gojo did X" — and promptly ignored the theory to roast baby Naoya instead. The comment section fixated on how his infant face already looks exactly like his smug adult self, joked that he was a breast-obsessed misogynist straight out of the womb ("Is there no boob here or what?!"), ran with the "Baby-in Naoya" pun (Zen'in → Baby-in), and seized on his October 22 birthday as proof he "came out at maximum speed" to match Toji's date. A few sincere takes about Naobito's age and inheriting the cursed technique snuck in too — before the thread quietly agreed you still can't bring yourself to hate him.

Re:Zero's official Break Time short for Episode 78, 「裏稼業姉妹暗躍日報」, went up the same night Season 4's second cour premiered, and it shows an early Elsa-and-Meili job where a bodyguard cuts off Elsa's arm — which then grows back while she tells Meili one arm is a cheap price for her sister being safe. Across 290 comments, Japanese viewers spent far less time on the sisters than on the man who managed it: the loudest recurring line is some version of "anyone who can take Elsa's arm has to be seriously strong," followed by a wave of One Piece jokes about Elsa out-Shanks-ing Shanks. The one real disagreement is how strong that bodyguard actually was, and it gets settled with a quote from the author. Under that runs a quieter thread about the box Elsa is carrying, and about Elsa being someone the main story can't show anymore. Two of the three highest-liked comments on the video are not analysis at all — one is a life decision, and the other is the reply that lands it.

2,943 likesAnimeYouTubeRe:Zero Cour 2 PV: The Two-Month Wait Ends August 12 — Japan Replies in Petelgeuse's Voice
The PV for Re:Zero Season 4's second cour, 《Dakkan-hen》, confirmed an August 12 premiere across 21 stations in Japan, ending the gap since the first cour wrapped. The trailer shows Julius, Emilia fighting alongside him, Ram, and Shaula, and closes on a silhouette that commenters refuse to spell out. Across 2,054 comments, the top reaction drew 2,943 likes — and it is written in the voice of a villain. "My brain trembles" is Petelgeuse's catchphrase from Season 1, and Japanese fans have folded it, along with sloth, diligence and gluttony, into their everyday hype vocabulary. The result is a comment section where people apologize to the production staff for their own slothfulness and thank them for their diligence, entirely unironically, while counting down the two months they spent waiting. The last line of the thread is four words pointed at the final shot, and nobody replies to it with an explanation. Editor's note: Re:Zero Season 4 is a split cour — 《Soushitsu-hen》ran 11 episodes from April 8, and 《Dakkan-hen》runs 8 episodes from August 12, for 19 episodes total.

Ghibli's Producer Waited Out the Ghibli-Style AI Trend. What Slop Sounds Like in Japanese.
Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki turned down every interview request during the Ghibli-style AI image boom, because he figured people would get bored of it on their own. He said so in an interview with Asahi Shimbun, AUTOMATON WEST put it into English, and it landed on r/anime. I opened that thread expecting a fight, since I read these comment sections every night for a living. Almost nobody was fighting. Here is what that thread actually said, what happens to the word slop when I carry it into Japanese, and why the Miyazaki line about an insult to life itself keeps getting attached to the wrong thing.
