Star Fox on Switch 2: The Beloved 'Gomen-chai!' Catchphrase Got Cut

“Hot take: this game's single most divisive change is them cutting the "Gomen-chai!" line.”
On the Switch 2 version of Star Fox, Japanese fans reacted by zeroing in on exactly what changed from Star Fox 64. The single most-debated point: the cutesy "Gomen-chai!" ("sowwy!") voice line getting cut. From there the thread argues Fox got Westernized — he lost the polite, earnest-hero feel of 64 and now reads like a cocky modern kid, and people miss the punchy "Mission Complete" delivery. The mood is nostalgic and split, "good and bad, but it's a different beast from 64" — with one fan landing on why the new Fox might actually be the right call.
Japanese fan reactions (excerpted from 187)
Well, "Gomen-chai!" is gone, but in exchange Fox stopped being a "leave it to me" bot, so…
— @TheRock832130 likesThe dialogue wasn't great overall. Fox not respecting his father is going to feel off, especially for anyone who played Assault.
— @RubberSoul00716 likesGutted that Katt's "Hey kid, I'll lick your face later" line is gone.
— @つばやん-g7s9 likesThe story plays out like a movie and it's easy to follow — I liked that. But man, I really wanted that "Andross, sowwy~!" 🤪
— @KatohRita0 likesFor better or worse, it feels like a different beast from 64. Personally I loved how 64 Fox was this earnest, straight-up good-guy hero. Switch 2 feels like they rebuilt the whole vibe almost completely Western-style. Thanks for the clear breakdown though 👍
— @かめちゃんch51 likesSad that 64 Fox lost his politeness and turned into some modern kid.
— @親猫-f6q27 likesFox's personality change is divisive too. He was a rare talking protagonist for an old Nintendo hero, so people feel a loss when he's different.
— @ひまわり-l5h17 likesThe dialogue felt like it got closer to the English-version Star Fox. Maybe they had to unify his personality to sync the action and lines in the cutscenes?
— @wenli.k0 likesI wonder if Fox is sticking with that personality going forward. As someone who loved earnest Fox, that's a little lonely…
— @Endeavor-10122 likesHe's literally looking at Andross's true form and his reaction is way too composed. Normally you'd be like "So THAT'S what you really are!"
— @ブランドーディオ-p6z4 likesIt became a one-of-a-kind "playable sci-fi movie" and I love that. People are talking about Fox's personality, but I actually prefer the new one — over the safe, easy-to-project-onto 64 Fox, this emotional, more distinct Fox won me over. New Fox is the way to go for me.
— @ハヅキ-d9y0 likesI really wanted them to keep how 64 delivered "Mission Complete." I loved that punchy BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM impact.
— @kakkun7628 likesMaybe with the multi-language support, the same staging just didn't land right so they dropped it…
— @hoohoo-rb9hj4 likes"We're breaking through the center of the enemy fleet!" should've been left as-is. I liked that straight-up taking-command feel.
— @しょぴお-l5i0 likesI was let down by the timing of the +50 HIT pop on the Macbeth boss kill. 64 had absolutely impeccable tempo on stuff like that.
— @disknghs31688 likesIt honestly saddens me that the Sector Y boss lost its goofy small-fry energy.
— @yotaro3850 likesThe escape scene with James after the final boss — I liked 64's direction better 😂
— @ヘムヘムabc1 likesIf the courses and bosses are the same, I'd have preferred they kept the character voices too.
— @へいるまんtsa0 likesI want them to add a toggle for original-game dialogue.
— @かげ-z4x3 likesIt's fun, but if you've got attachment to the original there are definitely bits that'll make you grumble.
— @ドラゴンリュー-f1x25 likesHonestly it's just nostalgia bias — as a game to play today it feels like you'd get bored fast.
— @たな-i8c4 likesPlenty bugged me: light on content, you have to route through pointless stages just to earn medals, no new gameplay systems, and the dialogue lost its edge. But the visuals genuinely look like a movie, and this clearly feels made to bring in newcomers — so what matters more than an old-timer like me is how much new players got into it. With the roleplay camera and the solid online play, I think it's an ambitious piece built around onboarding newcomers and visual presentation.
— @メダカ-x4k0 likesI'm a Star Wars fan, and ever since the Mario movie I got Star Wars vibes off Fox, plus this game feels really close to that (in a good way), so I bought it. It's my first Star Fox and I'm having a blast — there are tons of moments that feel like homage. The lip sync is built for English too, so I set the audio to English and it feels like watching a foreign film with subtitles. People who know the older games might find lots of it jarring, but as a newcomer I felt the fact it doesn't just stop at a rehash is something that deserves credit.
— @アミメ-y9g3 likesOn that Venom 2 thing, this version actually sits better with me. In the original it was so "he modified himself, so why is he moving around in the flesh?"
— @m2018-b2s3 likesPersonally I enjoyed the 64 version, so the nostalgia stacks on and I'm satisfied. The graphics are gorgeous — that's Switch 2 for you. I'm playing it with my kid, swapping stories about back in the day ♪
— @ちょこさん-h3i5 likesThe Great Fox's covering fire in Area 6 was absurdly flashy and so satisfying. You're insanely strong, Great Fox…
— @富士森-u7v17 likesThe dialogue's almost all changed and there's staging that frustrates me, but I'm genuinely so happy Star Fox came back to life in this era. I'd love a sequel to turn this into a reborn Star Fox series.
4176 likesAs an old-school player, this video said everything I was feeling! If they use this as a springboard for a fully new Star Fox 2, I'd be over the moon!
— @すあま-q7j0 likesI loved Star Fox 64 so I want to play this so bad. I'd legit buy a Switch 2 just for it 😂
— @レタス太郎-v1j0 likesJust having a new Star Fox at all makes me happy.
— @shin51masu1 likesProps for it not being full price.
15 likesHe's in Smash, but he doesn't feel that well-known, so I hope Star Fox spreads to today's students.
— @you97790 likesFor me the flavor felt close to a Star Fox version of GQuuuuuuX… stamp of approval! If they'd beef up Assault, which I loved story-wise, at this quality, I'd get greedy for that. Also, at 11:30 it was my first time seeing Wolfen II lose its wings — wild!! P.S. I accidentally tapped dislike a second ago — KENT, nooo!! Gomen-chai!! 😭 (re-tapped the like!)

Meccha Chameleon is the hide-and-seek party game out of Japan that just exploded worldwide: hiders disguise as objects while a seeker hunts them. But in this clip — shared by Japanese creator Sekai Ojisan — the hider does the exact opposite of hiding: he juke-dances around the 'stop man' seeker with pinpoint emote-cancels, and Japanese fans lost it. The most-liked comment simply declares that the entire point of the game has changed. From there the thread crowns a whole new archetype ('there are chameleon players, hide-and-seek players… and now: the dodge faction'), marvels at how the player shrinks his hitbox with emotes ('so crafty'), and notes that Chinese players in particular tend to run circles rather than hide. It's the affectionate, in-the-know laughter of a fanbase watching someone break their favorite game in the funniest possible way — right down to the exasperated question every player ends up asking about who gave the chameleon dodge skills in the first place.

A pricey (~50,000 yen) Balteus figure from Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon was announced half-jokingly as a giant "candy toy" — and Japanese fans piled in. The thread cracked up at the idea of a 1,000-to-1 Xylem being physically impossible, got genuinely grateful that FromSoftware keeps the IP alive through merch even without a sequel, and argued Balteus really is near the top of the PCA's combat roster — "of course they sent their best from the start." Affectionate, broke, and ending on a line about the thing prowling your room at night.

When word spread that the Switch 2 port of Elden Ring was being nicknamed the "Tarnished Edition" (褪せ人エディション), Japanese players gleefully ran with the in-joke. The thread imagined Nightreign converts getting bodied by the Tree Sentinel before Margit finishes them off, riffed on a fake "For You, Without a Maiden" sticker on the box, and rolled out every demigod insult in the game. It builds to the question that breaks everyone — and one reader's verdict on FromSoftware's relationship with discrimination.

Why Meccha Chameleon Sold 20 Million Copies. I Translated a Month of Your Comment Sections Looking for the Answer
Meccha Chameleon has sold twenty million copies in two months. A hide-and-seek game that costs about six dollars, built by two people in roughly two months, with nothing spent on advertising. Plenty of good writeups have already explained why, and the game-design arguments hold up fine. But since July 4th I have been building articles out of the overseas reaction to this game, twenty-six of them, reading a few thousand comments a night and translating them into Japanese. From where I sit, the developers did not sell this game and neither did the streamers. You did. The comment section did.
