Neon Genesis Evangelion: Japanese Fans Rewatch the Original — "The Problem Was Never the Kids, It Was the Adults"
“Evangelion's real problem isn't the teenagers — it's the adults who have zero interest in listening to anyone.”
Japanese fans rewatched the original 1995 Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series and landed on a striking reframe: the show's real problem isn't the broken teenagers, it's the adults who refuse to listen or explain anything. From there the thread maps the slow tonal slide — episodes 7–14 are the "bright" Eva, the shadows creep in around 15–17, and from 18 on "it becomes hell" — pausing on the warm middle: hot-pot nights, the comedy trio, and Asuka quietly going from saying Rei's name to never saying it at all. Nostalgic, a little raw, and it closes on the line that quietly defends Shinji after all these years.

Also, they never properly explain anything to the Children.
- @kuro8358👍 70
Evangelion is a world where the adults are to blame for everything. The kids didn't do a single thing wrong.
It's just that the adults are a mess.
Grown-up staff who won't listen and won't tell you anything. The fate of the world gets handed to a bunch of teenagers, and the ones getting hurt are also the kids. Of course things turn tense and bitter…
The thing is, basically every NERV staffer isn't even told why they're fighting. The operations commander herself doesn't learn the purpose behind the Angel attacks until late in the show. If they don't understand it themselves, they're in no position to worry about the kids.
- @hirou9657👍 12
When you put it that way, it's a wonder NERV functioned as an organization at all…
The real problem children in the original Eva aren't Shinji, Asuka, or Rei — it's Misato and Gendo.
Episodes 7 through 14 are the bright Eva. Shadows start creeping in around 15 to 17, and from episode 18 it becomes hell.
- @sinnkai100👍 132
The Unit-03 battle is where it suddenly goes pitch dark…
- @ka_ko_ka_ko👍 172
Which is exactly why the back half — and where The End of Evangelion takes it — hits the way it does……
The middle stretch after Asuka arrives in Japan is loaded with comedy and it's the most fun part of the show. (The ending, however.)
I love the pilots in the middle when they've got that goofy three-stooges trio energy.
The TV version was actually loved for this bright, school-drama-flavored stretch.
Everyone eating sukiyaki together, having sleepovers — I thought, man, this is pure youth 😮
An announcer who started watching on a comedian's recommendation said: the early episodes are so fun — that sweet, awkward shared-living life, packed with the dreams of teenage boys and girls. So how does it end up like THAT…?

No question about it, Asuka is adorable.
In the TV version Asuka genuinely thinks Shinji and Rei are dating, lol.
At first Asuka would sometimes call Rei by her name, but before long she stops saying it entirely — and you realize, oh, she's already starting to put distance between them…
- @kayosh4001👍 8
A bit overbearing, sure, but early on Asuka was the one reaching out to her first…
Later Asuka comes to loathe Rei because she keeps poking at Asuka's trauma — but at their first meeting, even when Rei gives her the cold shoulder, she doesn't really get annoyed and just shrugs it off with "what a strange girl~"
- @miyatotoro9924👍 78
Meanwhile Rei doesn't even try to use anyone's name and just calls people "that person," so I guess it can't be helped either…
Say what you want, but Rei is just cute.
I love the scene where Shinji watches Rei wringing out a cloth and says "that's kind of mom-like" ❤
Rei's "garlic ramen, hold the char siu" line was actually an ad-lib.
Apparently the script said "nori ramen." Yeah, as written that line would've been kind of a nothing.
- @lOvOllOuOl👍 57
I love how the three of them sit in "In the Still Darkness." Rei: "Humans feared the dark, used fire, and have lived by carving the darkness away." Asuka: "oooh, deeep~" Something about that little exchange just gets me, no idea why.
- @lastquarter405👍 5
I always loved "Angel Attack" and "In the Still Darkness" — the episodes that center the adults instead of the Eva pilots.
On a rewatch you really notice the animation holds up and it's just fun. Also you start hearing Asuka's and Rei's voice actors all over the background-crowd housewives, lol.
- @uma5843👍 10
It's precisely because Asuka is a good kid at heart that her later breakdown is so painful to watch. How did it come to this.
It's one of my favorite anime, but the image of that slide from the middle into the finale just looms so large…
- @junas05junas👍 15
For better or worse the ending leaves such a strong impression that the ordinary story up to the midpoint feels like a tale from the distant past…
- @yousay3197👍 10
I'd love to see a version of Eva that keeps the early vibe all the way and just barrels straight to the end like that.
- @batorasu2765👍 16
I mean, what Anno actually wanted to make was a proper Ultraman. How on earth did it turn into THIS……
"Everyone tried harder than I remembered" — what a great line lol. The Rebuild films only work because of everything the original series built up first.
- @kiichi7196👍 17
This is so true. The whole "Shinji is just a whiny wimp" take — I'm convinced it's written by writers who never watched the actual show and are just parroting hearsay.
- @YeahYeahYeah822👍 4
People slap the "whiny" label on Shinji from the back half of the TV show, The End of Evangelion, and Q — but that's the result of having his spirit broken over and over again.

📺 AnimeAnimeYouTubeClassroom of the Elite Year 2 Finale: Japanese Fans React — "The Staff Slacked Off Just Like Ayanokoji"
On Classroom of the Elite's Year 2 arc finale, Japanese fans reacted to an adaptation glow-up so big they barely recognize the show that used to suffer broken animation and a butchered story. The thread rolls from relief that Season 4 finally looks the part, to a running gag re-titling it "Welcome to the Supremacy of Violence" because every master plan boils down to corner them and punch them, to a genuine plea: read light-novel Volume 5 before the next season. Affectionate, relieved, and very funny — capped by a jab at one character whose flawless animation makes the finale flashback look even rougher.

📺 AnimeAnimeYouTubeMobile Suit Gundam: Japanese Fans React on Whether Funnels Are Just Overpowered — "They Got Hard-Countered and Faded Out"
On Mobile Suit Gundam, Japanese fans dug into whether Funnels are simply overpowered — and then explained, with real lore depth, why they quietly died out. The thread rolls from "only a Newtype ace could use them, while the AI-assisted versions were too weak against real aces, so they sat in an awkward middle" to "by Char's Counterattack they were already just a support weapon," to mobile suits getting too fast for them — leading to Funnel Missiles and the tech being dropped around F91. Knowledgeable, friendly-argumentative mecha-lore energy, landing on a one-line verdict about exactly who broke the whole discussion.

📺 AnimeAnimeYouTubeMacross Delta vs Frontier: Japanese Fans React to Why Delta Got Left Behind — "So Basically Basara Is the Strongest"
On Macross Delta, Japanese fans dug into why it ended up overshadowed by Macross Frontier, and mostly landed on scale and structure. The thread rolled through Frontier's love triangle meshing perfectly with its songs, real shock that Frontier aired 18 years ago, and the take that Delta's stakes — one local planet's race against a single corporation — just couldn't match Frontier's galaxy-eating Vajra and Protodeviln. Die-hard Sheryl bias never quite died either. It's fond, nostalgic, franchise-insider energy that keeps circling back to one running gag: if Macross 7's Basara showed up, every war would be over in five minutes.

📺 AnimeAnimeYouTubeRe:Zero Season 4 Recovery Arc Key Visual: Japanese Fans React — "Everyone's Poses Are Based on Zodiac Signs"
Re:Zero Season 4 revealed the key visual for its Recovery arc, and the most-liked Japanese comment flagged a detail nobody else caught: the characters' poses are all supposedly based on zodiac signs. From there the thread split three ways — people squinting to actually verify the constellations, fans calling the composition too cool to follow such a brutal cour ending (with a real lump in the throat over the Episode 77 title callback), and a running gag about Reid fighting with giant chopsticks and his suspiciously gleaming pecs. Under it all, the usual Re:Zero dread: someone volunteered to collect Subaru's bones for him.
