“If somebody had just explained things properly, Shinji never would have gone off the rails. The war criminal here is Misato.”

106 likesWhy Everyone Is Cold to Shinji in Evangelion 3.0: Japan's Answer

  • If somebody had just explained things properly, Shinji never would have gone off the rails. The war criminal here is Misato.

  • Grown-up staff who won't listen and won't tell you anything. The fate of the world gets handed to a bunch of teenagers, and the ones getting hurt are also the kids. Of course things turn tense and bitter…

  • Misato and everyone else swung way too far in one direction. They could have fed him information a little at a time. What state the world is in, that humanity is nearly gone, that sort of thing. Also, back when the film came out people kept yelling, hang on, YOU were the one who said Go, Shinji!!

  • The Unit-03 battle is where it suddenly goes pitch dark…

  • If a single functional adult had been present, a proper explanation and some actual care would have happened. The adults around him are dodging responsibility. The end.

  • Also, they never properly explain anything to the Children.

  • A world without a single adult you can lean on. The worst possible one.

  • Say what you want, but Rei is just cute.

  • Isn't the problem that not one character ever leads with a reason or an explanation, only with emotion? That's what I kept thinking the entire time I watched it back then. And the ones who do explain go the other way, no feeling at all, just flat facts. I had no idea there was a reason that deep behind it. Reconstructed, huh.

  • I love how the three of them sit in "In the Still Darkness." Rei: "Humans feared the dark, used fire, and have lived by carving the darkness away." Asuka: "oooh, deeep~" Something about that little exchange just gets me, no idea why.

  • It's completely unfair. They tell him go out and fight, then when it fails he's told to atone for his sins. The other pilots don't get told maybe I should have taken it down myself either, they just get yelled at for being slow to decide. Across this whole film series Shinji gets an absurd deal.

  • The real problem children in the original Eva aren't Shinji, Asuka, or Rei — it's Misato and Gendo.

  • The responsibility lies with Anno for writing that scenario in the first place.

  • An announcer who started watching on a comedian's recommendation said: the early episodes are so fun — that sweet, awkward shared-living life, packed with the dreams of teenage boys and girls. So how does it end up like THAT…?

  • Shinji did nothing wrong lol

  • This is so true. The whole "Shinji is just a whiny wimp" take — I'm convinced it's written by writers who never watched the actual show and are just parroting hearsay.

  • I didn't really follow any of it, but basically Shinji is the Near Third Impact princess, right?

  • It's precisely because Asuka is a good kid at heart that her later breakdown is so painful to watch. How did it come to this.

  • Please don't make him sound like the princess of some otaku club (in Sakura's voice)

  • "Everyone tried harder than I remembered" — what a great line lol. The Rebuild films only work because of everything the original series built up first.

Editor's note

Japanese rewatch discussion of Evangelion has settled somewhere the Western conversation rarely goes: the problem is not the broken teenagers, it is the adults who refuse to explain anything to them. That reframe carries a lot of the commentary here.

It extends to the Rebuild films. On the question that has followed Evangelion 3.0 since release — why everyone treats Shinji as a threat instead of telling him what happened — the Japanese analysis is less about cruelty and more about what the adults are protecting.
