In Japanese mythology, Jizō is the guardian deity of deceased children and stillborn babies. Since Mayuri experienced the consecutive failures of Nemuri I through VI like a "parent" grieving six stillborn children, his Bankai design makes a lot more sense after this episode. He spent decades birthing and losing his own "children" before his 7th iteration, Nemu, finally survived.

    Shunsui Kyōraku's Bankai, Katen Kyōkotsu, acts as a literal stage play of a tragic Japanese double suicide (shinjū). Rather than typical combat, it forces both combatants into an inescapable, four-act theatrical narrative. Act 1: Shared Wounds — any wound either inflicts appears on both, though neither can die yet. Act 2: The Bed of Shame — black spots appear, causing profuse bleeding like an incurable illness. Act 3: The Abyss — both are plunged into water that drains their spiritual energy until one drowns. Act 4: The Final Act — Shunsui wraps a thread of spiritual energy around the opponent's throat and cuts it, ending the play.

  • あの細胞分裂器官は戦闘のために仕込んだものじゃないよ。ネムリ6号は細胞分裂が突然止まって死んだから、7号（ネム）には生まれつきそれを止めないための器官が入ってた。彼女が食べられることを見越して仕込んだわけじゃなく、そもそもそう作る必要があっただけなんだ

    He didn't plant the cell division organ in Nemu for any fight. If you remember, Nemuri no.6 died because its cell division suddenly stopped. So No. 7 always had it from birth, to prevent the cell division stopping. It's not like he did it in anticipation of her getting eaten, that's just how she needed to be made.

  • ネムの細胞分裂器官の本質は彼女を生かし続けるためのものであって、ペルニダを倒す副作用は『いつか食べられると分かってた』みたいな意図的なものじゃないんだよ

    The whole point of the cell division thing in Nemu is that it's what's keeping her alive.. so the side effect of killing Pernida wasn't an intentional thing where he "knew she'd get eaten at one point or another"

  • これ、シリーズで一番過小評価されてる皮肉だと思う。京楽が皇宮四天王の隊長に『お前は間違えた』と言い、自分の総隊長という立場を根拠に持ち出す：『総隊長という地位は、ユーハバッハ軍のいかなる地位よりも重い』ってやつ

    It's my favorite underrated insult in the series. Shunsui telling the Leader of the Royal Guards that he made a mistake and citing his own position as authority on the subject: "My position as Head Captain holds more prestige than any position in the Quincy Army."

    Shunsui's Zanpakuto is Katen Kyokotsu. The first kanji in Katen is "Flower" ("Hana" in kun-yomi). In older periods, women's names were often derived from plants or flowers, and the "O" prefix was an honorific used to express affection. So "Ohana" is his way of showing affection towards his sword.
