    Actually, it makes sense that these Bleach terms are harder for Western fans to distinguish, since English relies on a phonetic alphabet. In the original Japanese, however, these terms use Kanji (ideograms), meaning each character inherently carries a specific visual and historical meaning. Take the four core Shinigami combat arts, known collectively as Zankensoki (斬拳走鬼): (斬/Zan) Zanjutsu — swordsmanship. "斬" literally means to cut or slay, and "術" means technique. So it literally translates to "the art of slaying." (拳/Ken) Hakuda — hand-to-hand combat. Represented by "拳" (fist). (走/So) Hoho — footwork. Represented by "走" (running). (鬼/Ki) Kido — demon/spirit arts. "鬼" historically refers to the souls of the dead, so Kido can be understood as the mystic arts of spirits and the deceased. Kido is further subdivided by the first character of each type: Hado (破道, "way of destruction"), Bakudo (縛道, "way of binding"), and Kaido (回道, "way of healing").

  • ただ千年血戦篇の漫画は駆け足だったから、アニメの方が補完要素を足してより丁寧にやってるとも言えるけどね

    But also consider that the manga for the TYBW arc was rushed, so the anime does it more justice by adding in extras.

  • BLEACHの作者・久保帯人はボディホラーが好きで、昔からそういう要素を作品に組み込んでる。ただアニメ版はかなり検閲されてて、進むにつれて段々と血みどろ・グロさが増していく構成になってる

    The author of Bleach (Tite Kubo) loves body horror, so he has kind of always incorporated those elements into the series. That being said, the anime did censor a fair bit — it goes progressively more bloody and gory the further you get.

  • ホラー要素は確かにBLEACHの一部だけど、あくまで演出面の話。久保帯人は絶対認めないだろうけど、この作品は水木しげるの妖怪漫画『ゲゲゲの鬼太郎』からかなり影響を受けてると思う——あれこそ本物の日本ホラーだからリアクション動画として見る価値がある。ただBLEACH自体は少年バトル漫画に一滴のホラーを垂らした感じだね

    The horror element is definitely part of Bleach, but only in its stylization. Kubo will probably never admit it, but his work is incredibly inspired by GeGeGe no Kitaro, a popular Yokai manga by Shigeru Mizuki — actual Japanese horror worth checking out for a reaction. But Bleach is very much a shonen fight manga with a drop of horror.

    To answer your question about "gore": Bleach is a (mostly) swordfighting manga/anime. People get cut, they bleed, limbs are lost. That's just natural for a series like this, though genuinely gory moments are maybe a handful of times across almost 700 chapters. I hope you end up getting into the series — there are some fantastic powers, fights, and moments I think you as a comic fan would really enjoy!

    The "spiritual pressure too big to be sensed by those lower" idea only applies to "transcendental" beings on the path to godhood, not just having significantly more spiritual pressure. It's like a 3D object interacting with a 2D object — the 3D object can't be detected unless it moves to intersect that plane. When Aizen began his "deification," normal Shinigami could no longer sense him, but Ichigo — a hybrid qualified to ascend — could, proving he stood on the same dimensional level.

It's very similar to Western hell, but those who end up there aren't there forever — rather for a very long time (sometimes tens of thousands of years) until their karma is purified, after which their souls return to the cycle of rebirth. Hell in Bleach is based on this Buddhist concept.

  • 公平に言うと、BLEACH世界の地獄で隊長格がどう扱われるかは実際分かってない。彼らが拷問する側にいるとは到底思えなくて、むしろ看守・番人役を務めてるんじゃないかな

    To be fair, we don't actually know what Hell in the Bleach universe is like for them. I have my extreme doubts they're among the tormentors — more likely they serve as the guardians and wardens.

    24:45 — Technically a Zanpakuto is the evolved form of an Asauchi, given to potential Shinigami entering the Academy. If a Shinigami imprints enough Reiryoku into it, it evolves into a Zanpakuto and gains a soul. Attaining Bankai means your Zanpakuto's soul is fully realized as a separate but whole part of your own soul. And that's without even touching on Hollows, Quincy, or Fullbringers — Bleach really does have one of the most intricate power systems out there.
