This isn't 'moe-ification' at all to begin with — this is the standard. It's the OTHER Majors that got 'serious-ified.'

The fact that Maaya Sakamoto literally 'accepted' the role of Motoko, and the reassurance of seeing that Japan's younger generation of anime creators is genuinely being raised well — I'm grateful this documentary let me see all of that.

Same thing happened with Kiki's Delivery Service — the novel and the live-action version that actually follows it got trashed for being "too different from the Ghibli one." And it's not just Kiki; Ghibli's adaptations are usually nothing like the books.

"魔女の宅急便"も原作本と原作準拠の実写版が『ジブリ版と違いすぎる！』と酷評されてたとか "魔女の宅急便"に限らず、ジブリ版って原作と全然違う作品ばかりなんだけどね

I always read the manga Major's expressions as gag-comedy faces, so calling them 'moe faces' just feels off to me.

漫画の素子が見せる表情はギャグ顔だと思ってたから萌え顔と言われるとなんか違うと思ってしまう

Obvious when you say it out loud, but a long-running series keeps going because it's popular. What's different from the old days is how often a show now gets renewed on strong overseas numbers alone, even without huge buzz domestically.

当たり前の話だけど長く続いてるシリーズはやはり人気あっての継続なんだな 昔とやや異なるのは今は日本国内でそれほど人気じゃなくても海外人気が高くて続くパターンが結構あることか

Manga Motoko says cynical stuff, sure, but she's hot-blooded, warm, charming, messily human — that's what makes her great. Oshii's Major just looked like a doll to me and I was like, huh?

原作の少佐はシニカルな言動はするものの熱くて人情味溢れててチャーミングで人間臭い魅力的な存在なのよ。 押井版の少佐は人形にしか見えなくてはぁ？と思ったもん。

I've rewatched Kamiyama's version the most — the music and visuals just make it the easiest to sit through as an anime.

一番見たのは神山Verだなぁ 音楽とか映像とかアニメとして見やすかった印象
