Japan's most-liked comment about Monster Hunter

I can say with full confidence that Lao-Shan Lung is fun. The first time, at least.

  • The wind barrier nullifies your bowgun shots, the dragon wind-pressure says no thanks to melee — it's just not fun.

  • It'll be fun, sure, but the DPS is going to be miserably low and I can already picture it becoming a chore by the third hunt.

  • At first it was clearly "poison it and the wind vanishes, so use that to win!" — then they scrapped that too, and the answer to getting knocked on your butt just by getting close vanished, so it became "okay, so what are we supposed to do?" Of course people hate it. Poison finally had a clear purpose and they just deleted it — makes no sense. Same with Teostra and Nana. So "if it flies, flash pod" becoming the standard play was inevitable.

  • But that grind IS the fun part. I would like to state this for the record.

  • Told to get out of the Old World, told to go home in the New World, kicked out of the jungle. And yet, strangely, you can't bring yourself to feel sorry for it. That kind of Elder Dragon.

  • If Kushala came back in its Rise spec I'd be happy, but knowing the dev team, there's zero chance.

  • The part that sucks is how it flat-out refuses to let your attacks land. As an action game, that's a genuinely unpleasant design.

  • He was 4th in the urgent-quest lineup. I'll never forget sticking it out for three runs in a row and having everyone else bail on me.

  • 🤓 "I'm salty, so I'll make it immune to flash pods." And the result was Extreme-state Kushala, a true king of garbage.

  • It'd honestly be hilarious if you could pull a Levi-style spin-slash off the top of Lao's head and just go flying off into the distance forever.

  • The moment a dev says in an interview "it's a monster the staff are really attached to," I stop trusting them. With Kushala alone, the question of whether players actually have fun fighting it is completely missing. Even in the original it permanently goes into flight mode when near death — trash spec — and in World it's a towering pile of crap that nullifies every counter. Every time, my only impression is a cringe "my ultimate made-up monster" a grade-schooler would design.

  • For now I'm just praying Lao doesn't turn into a slog once they bolt him onto all of Wilds' new gimmicks.

  • ✕ Strong ✕ Weak ◯ Just bad

  • Is Kushala going to be Rise-based or World-based? Only Capcom knows.

  • A Fujitoku-produced Kushala — the landmine smell coming off that is off the charts.

  • So nostalgic. On pure tankiness alone he was the gatekeeper of Generations Ultimate, and the second you finally beat him everyone ran Lao weapons.

  • ???: "Allow me to show you the true strength of Kushala Daora."

  • Just getting to see Lao-Shan Lung in modern HD is already more than enough to make me happy.

  • A Kushala Daora that built up resistance to flash and poison stripping its wind barrier, AND learned to drop stationary tornadoes on top of that, was — to put it mildly — a literal pile of crap.

  • That said, I really don't want them suddenly cranking Lao's entire moveset into hyperspeed out of nowhere either 😅

Editor's note

Kushala Daora hate is a load-bearing part of Japanese hunter culture — “not hating it would be the weird part.” When Wilds: Ascendance brought back Lao-Shan Lung, the nostalgia came fully hedged: fun… the first time, at least.
