Japan's most-liked comment about Pokémon

Being abandoned by a Friendship-evolved Pokémon hit way harder than I expected. He's a piece of garbage and it STILL manages to look genuinely tragic. That's some skill.

Gotta say Slugma and Magcargo. Fine if you've got a hearth, but without one your house might just burn down lol

  • There's no way we don't get an Alola dynasty arc… lol

  • Yeah, the Lumiose-born Mega Evolutions really do have a lot of high-quality Pokémon in the bunch.

  • They pay off the carefully planted foreshadowing — that overusing the Strong Sphere destroys bonds — and cap it with total dignity annihilation. Even a kid can take one look and instantly get that Spinel got exactly what he had coming. A great way to land that payoff.

  • Honestly there are probably fewer Pokémon you CAN keep than ones you can't.

  • Arceus had a quiet, understated charm so I get that, but Z-A is for kids, no?

  • I just swept all three of my opponent's Pokémon with Mega Staraptor. This is absolutely the kind of success that ruins you.

  • Looking back at Spinel's ending, it's genuinely clever that his main Pokémon is an Umbreon. The other two executives carry Pokémon that can Mega Evolve — and Mega Evolution requires a bond, so using it confirms one exists. Umbreon's evolution involves a bond too, but it can't Mega Evolve, so while the bond clearly used to be there, there's now no clear way to prove it still is.

  • It's because everyone in that world is basically a super-powered Pallet Town person.

  • Give me a Legends Celebi where I can see Entei, Raikou and Suicune before their reincarnation, and the Burned Tower before it burned down…

  • When I saw Mega Staraptor dumped the majority of its base-stat gains into bulk, I was like "wait, you're THAT kind of guy now?" — and then THIS happened. Dude, what even happened to you?

  • So once Spinel gets out, does he get to rekindle things with the Umbreon that waited for him all along — or does he get his brain shattered watching it lovey-dovey with some other trainer, wearing a doting face it never once showed HIM……

  • When you read the Pokédex entries some of them are clearly impossible to keep, yet in-game people just casually own them. I'm starting to think the Pokédex is lying.

  • I want the Scarlet & Violet Legends to be split into a future arc and a past arc.

  • All those Megas that got called "yeah this thing's trash" before the Abilities dropped keep getting saved one after another — and then there's poor Malamar, the one and only that turned out exactly as bad as everyone predicted.

  • Losing the trust of a Friendship-evolved Pokémon — the literal symbol of a Pokémon being deeply attached to its trainer — is the kind of dignity-destroying ending that feels obvious in hindsight but the franchise had somehow never actually done before.

Editor's note

Alongside the news cycle — new Megas, the next Legends region — Japanese fans are at their best in hypotheticals: which Pokémon you could never actually keep as a pet, or why being dumped by a friendship-evolved Pokémon is the heaviest punishment in the Pokémon world.
