• The late 2010s were such a dark age… so many anime, even popular ones, got the kind of bargain-bin budget Classroom of the Elite used to get. Ever since Demon Slayer, a ton of franchises have come back to life on bigger budgets — thank god.

• The new director who took over from Season 4 was just so good. It really proves an anime's quality comes down to the director and their connections, not the studio. They pulled in heavy hitters from all over, so I've got hope for Season 5 and beyond.

• Nah, holding her own against Shiba, who outclasses her, makes senior Kiryuin really impressive too. In the novels Ayanokoji even admits he'd have been in deep trouble against both Tsukishiro and Shiba, so she contributed a ton.

  Re:Zero's official Break Time short for Episode 78, 「裏稼業姉妹暗躍日報」, went up the same night Season 4's second cour premiered, and it shows an early Elsa-and-Meili job where a bodyguard cuts off Elsa's arm — which then grows back while she tells Meili one arm is a cheap price for her sister being safe. Across 290 comments, Japanese viewers spent far less time on the sisters than on the man who managed it: the loudest recurring line is some version of "anyone who can take Elsa's arm has to be seriously strong," followed by a wave of One Piece jokes about Elsa out-Shanks-ing Shanks. The one real disagreement is how strong that bodyguard actually was, and it gets settled with a quote from the author. Under that runs a quieter thread about the box Elsa is carrying, and about Elsa being someone the main story can't show anymore. Two of the three highest-liked comments on the video are not analysis at all — one is a life decision, and the other is the reply that lands it.

  Why Japanese Anime Keeps Winning: What Japan's Own Comment Sections Give Away

  Ask why Japanese anime is so hard to beat and the answer usually comes back as a pile of nouns. Budgets. Sakuga. I spend my nights reading and translating Japanese comment sections, a few thousand at a time, and from that side of the glass the answer sits much further upstream. Not in the show you streamed. In everything that got cut before it ever reached you. That part never shows up on a timeline.
