Macross Delta vs Frontier: Why Delta Got Overshadowed by Frontier's Scale

“Honestly the most shocking fact here is that it's been 18 years since Frontier aired.”
On Macross Delta, Japanese fans dug into why it ended up overshadowed by Macross Frontier, and mostly landed on scale and structure. The thread rolled through Frontier's love triangle meshing perfectly with its songs, real shock that Frontier aired 18 years ago, and the take that Delta's stakes — one local planet's race against a single corporation — just couldn't match Frontier's galaxy-eating Vajra and Protodeviln. Die-hard Sheryl bias never quite died either. It's fond, nostalgic, franchise-insider energy that keeps circling back to one running gag: if Macross 7's Basara showed up, every war would be over in five minutes.
Japanese fan reactions (excerpted from 387)
Wait… WHAT?!
なん…
— @達郎大石-l1k1 likesHonestly I thought the franchise was finished. Everyone kind of did, so maybe the staff panicked and pulled the reckless move of aping idol-anime stuff — or the director just recycled something he'd worked on before.
— @青木伸一-o2e4 likesDelta is a good show too, but in Frontier the love triangle clicks into the songs in this perfect way.
73 likesRight from the OP "Triangler," it's already pushing the love-triangle hard, and that was great.
— @ヒロ-j3c2 likesDelta's bland lead makes it worse. Frontier's Alto had that kabuki-actor backstory giving him a boost, and in the movies the young-Sheryl-and-Alto relationship was just too good.
— @武さん将さん-u3r16 likesFrontier hit so hard that Delta feels faint by comparison. To this day I'm a Sheryl stan.
— @龍カルチャーパーク2世-x5w44 likesGoing from galaxy-scale enemies like the Protodeviln and the Vajra down to one local planet's humanoid race fighting a single corporation — yeah, that's just not going to hype anyone up.
— @音速丸-y4g46 likesWith the whole "what the Vajra left behind became the new threat" premise, Delta actually did fine as a sequel. I was happy it had so much respect for Macross Zero and the original Macross too.
— @shinzi41018 likesSo basically Basara Nekki is the strongest. Got it.
— @らいか-f1o116 likesBoth of those epic enemies got turned into allies by the power of song — by "one music idiot" and "two divas." No matter how many you add, there's no winning. And the music idiot sources his own Valkyrie, flies it, AND sings, all solo. At one point he's literally doing it with nothing but his bare body. Makes no sense.
— @zozo647412 likesPeople literally say that if Basara were around, both Frontier AND Delta would wrap up instantly 🎸
— @supaoka9213 likesPeople say he'd sing for two seconds and instantly understand what the Vajra even want — you really feel the gap in class lol.
— @age-s21245 likesThe way Basara just casually slips into the lineup whenever they do a "divas through history" montage — that's cheating!
— @bonmiso22 likesHonestly what Walküre does… Macross 7 already did something close to it, with the Jamming Birds unit. But Basara flying out solo to sing — a straight upgrade at both piloting and singing — was the only one that won. Ever since Basara, if your answer is just "well, call Basara," then that's that.
— @sumahotanuki147118 likesI love 7 (and I wasn't even born when it aired).
— @xxxg00vv0ew9244 likesI do prefer Frontier, but Delta's Walküre are flashy and have their own different kind of charm, I think.
11 likesI think "Daisuki de Daikirai" is a great song though…
— @ジェイ-x8u5 likesI love "Ikenai Borderline" for the record.
— @yuki-w8z-m1z8 likesWith the Delta TV series I kept thinking, do we really need this many heroines? Way too many women for the runtime — everyone's got great character designs but there's no screen time to actually dig into them. Also Walküre's songs are secretly really hard to sing. Frontier's tracks are the ones that pop off at karaoke.
4 likesWith five of them, the audience's enthusiasm got spread thin and no breakout mega-popular character ever emerged. If it'd been three idols and one pilot, it might've gone differently.
— @ryo_ku_ou5 likesHonestly there are too many characters. Walküre, plus Delta Squadron, plus the Windermere enemies — it's all such a jumble. They'd have been better off thinning the hero side, maybe going full Frontier-style and just having Walküre fight in Valkyries. As is, every character's episodes ended up weak.
— @tibetan-x4d10 likesThe pilots were bland too — even the lead Hayate, everyone except Messer.
— @もやしライス-p9e11 likesFrontier had just the right amount of love triangle, and that worked. Delta has no central pillar you can point to and go "this is it!"
3 likesDelta's love triangle being weak is the real shame…
— @ko1ktmr3042 likesOf the classic Macross trinity — "songs, fighter jets, love triangle" — Delta only barely clears the bar on the songs.
— @mk-pe4dr6 likesFrontier wasn't just the characters — the Valkyries were great too. The Armored and Super Pack ideas built around transformation, and keeping the forward-swept-wing lineage on the number-9 machine.
— @斎藤始-l5i2 likesMax's combat scenes were a genuine treat though…
— @佑-f7s20 likesSuddenly mingling with aliens nonstop and skipping way too many rungs on the lore ladder is also a problem.
17 likesI'm fuzzy on it, but didn't Delta retcon things so that "actually so-and-so from past series secretly had special power in their singing"? The whole emotional core was the Zentradi, who knew nothing but war, being moved by encountering the culture of "song." If you then bolt on "actually Minmay's voice had special powers!", it ruins all of that. It's good precisely because it was just an ordinary love song.
— @sio58120 likesWith Delta the story just sort of… doesn't move. It felt like they were forever running infiltration missions. I swear there were episodes where the mecha barely showed up. Compared to Frontier it just lacks momentum. But the songs, I love.
— @user-ir6ds1sj2i2 likesI heard Delta didn't really build out the scripts and instead decided things by committee on the fly, calling it "live feel." The result was a story that just loops: infiltrate, get spotted, battle, repeat.
— @AMDroid-w7u5 likesI'd heard Delta was supposed to be one cour and got suddenly stretched to two and dragged. I went "no way that's real" and watched it — then right when it felt like "oh, they're wrapping up?" it abruptly started dragging and I was like "you've gotta be kidding…"
— @madoSMZ6 likesPart of me thinks it's the difference in TV airing back then. Frontier aired pretty much nationwide, but Delta felt limited.
— @midorikazekai24 likesI feel like Frontier also got a boost from being right in the Niconico golden age.
— @Escudo-r1g8 likesI clearly remember how shockingly little buzz Delta had while it was actually airing.
— @やぬ-u8m1 likesDelta was so under-the-radar that by the time I even heard of it, it had long since ended…
1 likesThe fact that even if Freyja gets her happy ending she's still doomed to die young — that's just too sad.
— @sheep-me-f2i8 likesI remember Delta's ages being kind of busted: Freyja, being a short-lived species, is basically pushing 40 in human terms, and Mikumo, despite how she looks, is three years old.
— @中川幸洋-j7x0 likesMacross Delta's enemies and scope inevitably came out smaller than the previous work's, and that's the sticking point. But the follow-up Absolute Live was good, and I do love Walküre 🎤
— @supaoka925 likesQuit fighting over F vs Delta… Want a crazy dogfight? Just go watch Isamu. Want fiery songs? Just go watch Basara.
— @sumahotanuki147112 likesA rough, thick-cut slice of the truth.

A Japanese anime commentary channel dug into overseas streaming rankings and found Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia sitting at #1 for the summer season — a genuinely strange result for a slow, historically dense show about 13th-century Mongol politics, in a chart usually dominated by power-fantasy isekai. Across 264 comments, the reaction split roughly two ways: viewers thrilled a demanding, unglamorous history show could still top a chart, and skeptics pointing out that ranking-site numbers reflect that site's specific audience more than anime as a whole. Several commenters compared the appeal to the overseas hit prestige drama Shogun, arguing that unfamiliar political intrigue in an exotic historical setting travels well precisely because it isn't trying to be a power fantasy. It ends with someone arguing the show's real win isn't the ranking at all — it's converting people who knew nothing about the Mongol Empire into people who suddenly want to know more.

Studio Bind's official PV for Mushoku Tensei III's next arc, Chaos Breaker, confirms the story picks back up this Sunday, August 16 — moving past the slower "home life" stretch of the last several episodes and into the arc a lot of novel readers have been waiting years to see animated. Across 1,312 comments on the trailer, the mood wasn't hype so much as bracing: one heavily-liked comment (1,311 likes) tells protagonist Rudeus to "do your best from here" while admitting the viewer needs to prepare themselves too, and another (977 likes) calls this "where Mushoku Tensei really begins, in a way." Multiple commenters mapped the shift onto the classic four-act kishotenketsu story structure, noting Season 2 closed out the "development" section and this arc finally opens the "twist." It ends with someone simply wishing the story luck on its way back into danger.

330 likesAnimeYouTubeRe:Zero Break Time Episode 78: A Bodyguard Took Elsa's Arm — What Japan Said
Re:Zero's official Break Time short for Episode 78, 「裏稼業姉妹暗躍日報」, went up the same night Season 4's second cour premiered, and it shows an early Elsa-and-Meili job where a bodyguard cuts off Elsa's arm — which then grows back while she tells Meili one arm is a cheap price for her sister being safe. Across 290 comments, Japanese viewers spent far less time on the sisters than on the man who managed it: the loudest recurring line is some version of "anyone who can take Elsa's arm has to be seriously strong," followed by a wave of One Piece jokes about Elsa out-Shanks-ing Shanks. The one real disagreement is how strong that bodyguard actually was, and it gets settled with a quote from the author. Under that runs a quieter thread about the box Elsa is carrying, and about Elsa being someone the main story can't show anymore. Two of the three highest-liked comments on the video are not analysis at all — one is a life decision, and the other is the reply that lands it.

Why Japanese Anime Keeps Winning: What Japan's Own Comment Sections Give Away
Ask why Japanese anime is so hard to beat and the answer usually comes back as a pile of nouns. Budgets. Sakuga. I spend my nights reading and translating Japanese comment sections, a few thousand at a time, and from that side of the glass the answer sits much further upstream. Not in the show you streamed. In everything that got cut before it ever reached you. That part never shows up on a timeline.
