Sorry man, you lost me, this is an excellent romance for me. I agree with you about "will they won't they" but relationships a re not about "getting there", I just can't agree with that point. I particularly like that he is not some wide eye teenager in love, it is a more simple and realistic relationship. Just two adult slowly developing a healthy relationship as they come to learn more about the depth each other have and about how much happier they are with the other in their lifes.

The manga keeps the framework of their interaction, but it also starts introducing other characters, their backgrounds, and their interactions. It really is a slice of life with a hint of romance, not necessarily between the two mains.

Super true and the romance isn't even the biggest aspect of the show. It is a slow burn for a reason. Both parties very much share the idea that the status quo is fine for them, that is key to the dynamic. the romance is the later conflict upsetting that status quo that they (and we) are by that point so comfortable with. Also the ages are very much part of the plot, the age of all the cast is important to their perspective on the story.

4:20 Does a romance need to start with a clear intention towards romance? You could argue some of the best romcoms, like Toradora, are memorable because the main pair spends time together, outside of initial romantic feelings. People meet and hang out in all kinds of ways, and then sometimes those things develop into relationships. The trope of 'so wait when was our first actual date?' is a real thing. Most of my now-married friends started like that (if they didn't meet on a dating app). On the net, I think we're a little too interested in pre-labeling a relationship as romantic at the outset, and keeping it in a box. "Friend zone" and whatnot. But truth is, some relationships can and do evolve. Only some tho. And the 'why' and 'how' and 'when' and 'do they both' are interesting questions, when left open this way. If done right, I think that can be more interesting than starting with courtship, and only leaving open the 'yes or no'.

Yamada is in her mid-20s, and the age-gap aspect of the romance is a feature, not a bug. Personally I'm fine with it, we're talking about two adults here, no minors involved. There'll be generational differences between the two for sure, which in itself could be interesting to explore, but nothing problematic otherwise.

I can understand feeling off about the age gap of it all, 20-ish years is quite a bit even for adults, but the main thing here that, in my opinion, doesn't raise any red flags is the complete lack of a power dynamic. When you think of age gap romances, boss/employee or professor/student come to mind (to me, at least), and those pairings have a clear and significant power dynamic, but in smoking behind the supermarket they are just 2 adults completely unaffiliated with each other who just happen to be different ages

I think the reason the romance works is that Sasaki understands the inherent power dynamics of age gap romances. That being said, Sasaki is a painfully good man who has major self-esteem issues. He doesn't think he is even worthy of having Tayama/Yamada as a partner. It is a slow burn because the two of them, particularly Yamada, are growing up through the series. Yamada is falling hard for Sasaki BECAUSE Sasaki respects her. She has a lot of creeps and occasional stalkers and was worried Sasaki was one of them, but nope: he's just a good man who's day is brightened by Yamada's customer service smile. But, again, major self esteem issues.

Age gap could be waaaaaaay worse, the backstory episode got me nervous for a second but ultimately it remains palatable. It's kinda like call of the night, in that it doesn't make it weird. Mushoku tensei is an example of awful age gap execution, if rudeus wasn't such trash and acted more like sasaki or nazuna i could see it working but the vibes are completly off. I liked what after the rain did with its age gap. Probably the best age gap romance out there IMHO

Saying "the age gap is marketing" is just a cope. Age gaps in Japanese literature? The Tales of Hikaru Genji, CLAMP, Code Geass, Inuyasha? I think the majority of the older-male/younger-female romance stories in Japanese literature are written by women. Josei and Shoujo manga get much less attention and the content has probably flown under your radar all these years. Are we saying that the ideals of women are problematic? A 20 year age gap is not unheard of and I've known happy families that have grown from such relationships. Might it cause some hardships later down the road? Most likely, yes. But, fundamentally, we have to ask if the pair is happy with their relationship. It would be a point of tension if her parents weren't receptive, and that is their right since it's their blood. But I think the morality policing is getting outright ridiculous. This doesn't help change the image of millennials being the new Victorians. Hypothetically, if you prevented an age gap relationship with henpecking, you may be dooming both people to a less happy future to satisfy your "morality". Do you want to discuss the minefield of modern dating between peer age cohorts? I like this show because it reminds of when I used to work at supermarket or restaurant and I would smoke behind the shop and have similar interactions with the girls that smoked. The age gap wasn't as severe, but the whole thing is relatable. Henpecking from the peanut gallery included.

I don't know why people are getting so bent about the age gap, especially the ones that don't have the full context from either the anime so far or, especially, the manga so far. This need to either force or imply that it's "creepy" somehow. They're both adults, and, surprisingly for romance stories apparently, they're both acting like adults. I think one point that also helps the "Sasaki is the only one not noticing" is, not only him being a bit clueless (for a while,) but also that he is an overworked salary man meeting her at the end of his day. His mind is fried and tired at that point. He's not thinking too much about it and ends up being more concerned to be helpful and giving honest advice when he can, that "figuring out" keeps getting pushed to the side in his head.

Iâve actually been enjoying it as a slow burn romance and hope we get some payoff because the âwill they or wonât theyâ seems somewhat earned. The leads have chemistry, Yamada has clearly expressed interest in Sasaki with her negging him as her Tayama persona and Sasaki just seems too clueless to get it, probably because he canât imagine a young woman having interest in an older man, but does still get flustered when she flirts with him. Aside from the whole âClark Kent/Supermanâ plot device, it actually feels somewhat grounded in reality for how people who meet and spend casual time together can start to form a deeper connection and fall for one another compared to your typical romance manga/anime. But no matter where it goes, Iâm enjoying this watch. It is very pleasant and cozy.

i have started reading the manga before i knew about this anime. Currently waiting for the next Volume to be released soon. I really love where the manga is going and i thought to myself "this would benefit so much of an anime adaption" and so far i was right. Love the voices for all the characters so far, pretty much what i envisioned it would be. As a 41 year old guy myself, i resonate sooo hard with this story.. some circumstances are similar (maybe not as extreme), but I can relate how he must feel about his life. I'm super excited to see where the story is going! Edit: after listening to your thoughts about it, and you stating you didn't read the manga, I understand you better now. He's the type of guy that doesn't want to be a burden for anyone, has dedicated his life to working this job, no family, no hobbies, just work, 6 days a week, in a company that sucks the life out of him. He's not going in there to pick up a girl, he's painfully aware that it'd be very creepy and expresses this a lot, he's there because seeing Yamada is his pick-me-up that gets him through the day. And he's ok with this and not even actively trying to change that. What i like about this story is that he's always polite, not hitting on her, he's not a creep going after young girls. She's teasing him for fun, but then realises he's not a sleazy scumbag, that he's considerate, thoughtful and well-mannered. I feel like since it's labeled as a romance, you're already thinking too far, because so far you didn't see any romance or romantic intent, yet you expect it to happen at one point and already judge it based on that. Some points you talked about will be addressed in the story, but it's a slow-burning story. So, I recommend to give it time and judge it as it is now and not as what it might be in the future.

As a 41 years old with a lot of 20something friends, I'm really liking the fact Sasaki is respectful and gentle. He's enjoying the company of these two women and just wants that. He's not pushy, he's not flirty, he's not actively trying to date either of them. For now, I'm not grossed out by the age gap and I hope I won't be in the future :)

I am 44, Brazilian, smoker and known this manga from years, i guess. My opinion its like yours and i am here to expand the view about it. About SasakiÂŽs age , my guess is to resonate with japanese workers manga readers and cash on nostalgia (Market shares and stuff). From my perspective, the manga is about the loneliness of a grown man that comes back 10 years after he left the neighborhood because he made a "bad decision" and kind of get demoted from the hq to his former subsidiary (from what i understand) and he start to think about life and the decisions that you make and where they got you now.... So, for me, its about him regreting, reviewing and reconsidering (rebuilding) his life after a "10 years pause".... My guess is that first he gets a pressure valve from stress from Yamada than he gets a smoker friend thats Tayama and from his perspective its more than he deserves considering all the bad decisions his made (last episode from this pre-release).... Continuing ftom this perspective i guess Sasaki will find love from the friendship like the schools animes and cash more from the nostalgia of discovering love after a long long time being an adult and performing the role you supose to act. Like "Dangers in my heart" where MC discover love from "hate".... The slow burn continues and we will enjoy a lot of the slice of life situations and moments between then. Sorry for my english, but i think i got to pass the message. I love this manga!

My dad shared with me a bit of wisdom. He told me "it's fine to enjoy being around attractive people." and that advice has helped me. I don't see someone attractive and imagine "oh man, I want to get with them or sleep with them" I'm just like, "I'm enjoying the chemistry of being around this person" And that's all it is, and I'm perfectly content leaving it that way.

Anime really can build a show around any idea. A few years ago I was telling a friend that isn't really into animation that Japan make so much stuff that you can probably think of any activity or hobby and there's probably a slice of life anime built around it. Even smoking.
