Its upsetting that psyren came out during the hardest period of shonen jump history, because I truly dont feel like it should have gotten axed but the competition was just too hard at the time.
I think another reason is that those who loved those mangas are now in a position where they can get what they want adapted.
A moment of silence for the Psyren fans who aren't alive to see this
because it would be geting no anime otherwise.
IS that fucking PSYREN in the year of our Lord of 2026.
Manga from so long ago, payphones were still a thing. Still can't believe they're making an anime adaptation of this now.
I'VE BEEN WAITING 16 YEARS FOR THIS
Seeing everything animated, hearing them speak, it's absolutely beautiful.
Psyren was axed and it was well known for the bad rushed ending. not hard to see why no one wants to engage with the new anime 10+ years after the ending, especially since its mostly faithful to the manga (smartphones are the only relatively new addition)
modern cgi mixed with traditional 2000s art style... looking good
I'm a huge Psyren fan, but I'll be honest, I don't blame them. Despite Psyren being a very well polled older Manga(which is why we're finally getting an adaptation), it really doesn't have good business metrics supporting it. When the manga first came out, it maybe had initial hype, but not much past that.
I've also been keeping an eye on the Pysren subreddit, official announcements, and so on, as the anime has been in development. There's... just not a ton of engagement. Hell, even an hour on this discussion post, there is 74 likes and 30-ish comments. Psyren just doesn't have a wide following. Why put in a ton of money into a series that will just lose them money? There's likely enough of a fan base to support at least this basic adaptation, maybe pull in a few more interested people, but the roi will be lean. Not saying this is how it should be viewed, but it's the unfortunate reality.
I'll still be watching the whole series though, good or bad.
Edit: to add some comparative numbers I found, Psyren released 16 Manga volumes from 2007 to 2010, and has sold 4 million copies to date. Promised Neverland released 20 Manga Volumes between 2016 to 2020 and sold 43 million copies to date. I'm not saying Psyren is comparable in quality to Promised Neverland, but it's to help illustrate why Psyren, from a business metric standpoint, just doesn't warrant a high anime budget.
Hell, Kagurabachi released in 2023, and they've just hit 4.5 million copies sold, which is more or less the total lifetime sales of Psyren. It's really no wonder that Psyren got a lower budget production.
This was my favorite Shonen of the time, not one of the Big Three. The premise was so interesting, along with the mystery of the first half.
I reread the first chapter after watching the episode and it's just as fast paced for that initial chapter.
@KillerA15maybe we will get lucky and the anime will continue further into the story instead of having the rushed abrupt ending of the manga
Not understanding all the criticism in this thread? I thought the first episode was great,
Hope they keep it up.
I made a comment to a friend that I'm not allowed to die any time before October since this and Overgeared are getting an anime
