スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり9話、「実は向かいの部屋」をやらなかったことに海外「都合が良すぎるからで正解」【海外の反応】

At the end I was waiting for them to find out they live across the street from each other or are neighbors.

I was really thinking she might text him or something. Just to initiate a smidge of contact outside their regular meetings. But thinking about each other at other times is a step in that direction, I suppose.

Jealous Yamada is the cutest! She’s always so cool and collected, it’s nice to see her off her game haha. It’s all thanks to Zawa and her big mouth! Back when I smoked, I always did like an early morning ciggie with a nice cup of coffee. It really was kind of nice. Almost as nice as a smoke after a big meal. Those were divine haha.

“自分は答えるのに適した人間ではないかもしれない。煙草はやめたけれど、代わりに電子タバコに乗り換えたので。コーヒーと煙草の組み合わせが恋しいのは、カフェインとニコチンという化学的な組み合わせのせいというより、煙がコーヒーの風味の輪郭を変えるからだ。 この作品が人に喫煙を始めさせて、『ヤニねこ』が人に禁煙させる、という冗談がさんざん言われているけれど、自分は本気で、後者のほうが「やめたのに他人が吸っているのを見ると衝動が来る」人にとって何倍も危険だと疑っている。 なぜなら『ヤニねこ』は、人がニコチンを得るためにどこまでやるか、そして喫煙がどれだけ汚くありうるかを不安になるほど正確に描いている一方で、少なくとも『スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり』には、一服ごとに少しずつ確実に燃えていって、フィルターに達したらヤニ子がもみ消して次に火を点ける——という、長回しで愛情深く作画された煙草の寄りの場面が無いからだ。 喫煙とニコチン依存を丸ごと軸にしているあの猫の作品と違って、この作品は大きな改変なしに『スーパーの裏でハンドスピナーを回すふたり』へ作り替えても、核心の魅力は実質的に変わらない。 とはいえ……登場人物が実際に喫煙する作品が、100%安全であることはない。”

I may not personally be the right person to ask, because while I quit cigarettes, I exchanged it for vaping. The main reason I miss the combination of coffee and a cigarette isn't really the chemical combination of caffeine and nicotine, but the way the cigarette smoke changes the flavour profile of the coffee. I seriously suspect that despite all the jokes about this show being the one that gets people to pick up smoking while Chainsmoker Cat is the one that gets people to quit, I strongly suspect the latter show is many times riskier for people who quit, but still get the urge to smoke from watching other people smoke in media. Because for all that Chainsmoker Cat is disturbingly accurate in depicting how far people will go to get their fix and how disgusting smoking can be, at least Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You doesn't feature any prolonged, lovingly animated close-ups of a cigarette slowly but surely burning up a little more with every drag until it reaches the filter and you Yaniko stubs it out to light the next one. Unlike the disgusting catgirl show that absolutely revolves around smoking and (nicotine) addiction, this show could, without too many changes, be retooled into Stimming with a Fidget Spinner Behind the Supermarket with You without meaningfully affecting the core appeal. That said... No show that features characters actively smoking is ever going to be 100% safe.
